First Bottle- How much BM?

We plan on giving our daughter her first bottle tomorrow to start the process. She's 3 weeks old...how much BM should I put in the first bottle. I don't have much of a supply yet so I don't want to waste any, but I want to make sure she gets enough.

Any thoughts?

  • offer no more then 2oz.  If she's still wanting more offer 1oz at a time.  the bottle can sit put for 4 hours.
  • I agree with 4oz. That's how much formula DS was taking.

  • We went through this exact thing last week when I went back to classes and DH was going to be giving LO BM in a bottle. My mom is a NICU/nursery/L&D nurse and works, too, as a lactation consultant.  She recommended preparing a bunch of bottles with 1 oz in each.  LO took 2 oz in each feeding.  My mom was saying there's something about LO's digestive enzymes that inevitably got backwashed into the bottle that can make the leftover milk go bad more quickly, so if we were to have prepared a 4 oz bottle and then he only took 2, those other 2 oz may have been wasted.  I would start with 2 oz but have more prepared.  I just hate to waste an ounce!  Good luck!

  • I would do 3 oz. DS is 3 weeks and will eat anywhere between 2.5-3.5 oz.

You can also start off at 2-2.5oz and just give her a little more if she still seems hungry.  That way you do not waste any.

    I agree with this.

    I agree too.

You do not need to offer much more than 2 oz. because BM is more effectively digested than formula therefore your baby doesnt need to have as much BM to stay full as another baby might need of formula.
