Babies: 0 - 3 Months

I cannot get her to stop crying!

I'm out of ideas. I tried to soothe her to sleep at 6 after an hour of being awake...it's now 9:15, she's still not asleep and I can't get her to stop crying!  I've tried everything...shushing, swaddling, nursing, bottle, wearing her, walking around.  I'm out of ideas and getting frustrated.

Any ideas?

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

  • Maybe it's gas? Maybe try Mylicon, tummy massage, warm bath, bicycle legs?

  • maybe stop trying to do things.  That doesn't make sense, but maybe she is just overstimulated at this point.  Dark quiet room, and just hold her.

  • You could try going in the bathroom and running the shower with the lights off.  The white noise/darkness/humidity combo might help.

Have you done the 5 S combo?  Swaddle, lay her on her side facing away from you, shush in her ear (loudly if she's being loud, so that she can hear you),  sway her from side to side (you want to get a little jiggle going with her head - this won't hurt her, it's actually quite soothing), and once she calms down a little bit, give her something to suck on.  Could be a pacifier, or your pinkie finger, fingernail down.

Good luck, and remember that if you're getting completely frustrated, it's OK to put her down someplace safe and give yourself a break for 5 minutes or so.

  • DD was fussy before too, even though she had just eaten and was changed. What seems to work for her when that happens is patting her back (pretty forcefully, like we're trying to burp her). I'm guessing that means she has some gas. I also hold her very close and tight to my chest, basically swaddling her with my arms if that makes sense.
    STM due Feb. 2017!
  • We've had good success lately holding her with her head to our heart, a white noise app on our phone in her other ear, jiggling her slightly and offering her our pinkie to suck on (yes, all at the same time if she's super duper fussy).

  • Lurking from 6-9

DD used to get like this when she was overstimulated.

I'd turn of the lights, hold her against my chest, and play this song while patting her back and lightly rocking.

    Good luck!

  • The hairdryer in the dark seems to work for us sometimes.
  • White noise?  Vacuum cleaner seems to work for us.

If all else fails, earplugs and booze.

lol!  Vacuum cleaner or the hair dryer, plus a paci always work for us if DS gets overtired and overstimulated.

  • Rock in a dark quiet room

Put her in the car and go for a drive.

That is so tough, but it doesn't last forever.  hang in there.  :)

  • If I read your post correctly she's been awake for 4 hours! She's def overstimulated and overly tired. Take her into a pitch dark room and rock her with white noise. Swaying in a dark bathroom with the vent fan on works instantly to quiet my LO.

  • Try putting her in a blanket and swinging her with your SO.  Lay the blanket down, set her in it, and each of you hold 2 corners, then pick her up like a hammock.  If you swing slowly from side to side this seems to work for an agitated baby.
  • LO and I have "dance party" when he's fussy like that. I play a few dance songs on my iPhone and dance around the living room holding him . He usually will stop fussing/crying for a few minutes and I at least get some exercise.
