have a question about car seats

So I am looking into car seats at the moment. And I really like the ones that grow and change with the child up until 80 pounds. Well I know most people have the car seat for infants that you can carry, but the ones that go from infant to young child are not ones that you can easily take out and carry the child around in.

Is it necessary to have a car seat that you can take out with the child in it, like to take out into public with you? The kinds that you carry around with one arm. Or is it possible to just carry the child out?? Just wanting opinions and even experience.

Is there anyone who did not have one of the carry around car seats and would just take their infant out and carry them, or use a sling?

thanks!

Re: have a question about car seats

  • I love my infant carrier but thats because winter is so darn cold here, i find hat it protects the babies more against the wind/snow/cold.

that said, I had no issue using the regular car seat with ds in dh's vehicle, and just using a stroller with him. It's really what you feel comfortable with. the infant carriers tend to go up to 22lbs... some 35 but those seem to be few and far between. Plus I don't thinkI could carry 35lbs of baby around in one of those.

  • We have the Graco Snugride infant seat and a Britax Marathon for his "big boy" carseat.  I like being able to take the entire seat out and keep him warm on the way into stores/church/etc. because I live in Chicago and its cold here!  I think its easier than dressing him in a huge bunting every time we leave the house.

  • You can just go right for the convertible, but I find the infant carseat easier because if LO falls asleep in the car, it's less disturbing to just take the whole seat out than to have to unbuckle him and disturb his sleep.

  • I also have a carrier car seat for now and love it.  It's so cold and I don't have to fuss with getting him into the seat and all that when it's raining and snowing and windy.  When I know I am going out and he's ready to nap I just put him in the seat till I'm ready to go, and when we're out and he' falls asleep in the seat I don't have to wake him to get him in and out of the car.  Also, when we go out to eat (not too often, but enough) we can sit the carrier in the highchair that the places have.  Many times I have looked and thought that the stroller would just be too bulky in a crowded place and DS isn't old enough to sit up in the high chair on his own yet.

  • I think it would be really tough not to be able to plop the car seat into a stroller. It's just such a great convenience:

  • I like having LO contained in the car seat so no one has to struggle to hold her while at church, out to eat, the grocery store, etc. Plus, she almost always falls asleep in it, so I love being able to bring her inside without waking her.

  • protection from cold, encourages sleep on trips out of the house  10 minute trip into the market = 10 minute struggle to get him/her out of carseat and into whatever carrier you have.  Because you aren't going to want to hold a baby that small and try to pick things up, and it gets old real fast waiting until you are on your own, or for someone else to do it for you.

  • We bought a convertible carseat and then we recieved an infant carrier as a gift also.  At first we used the infant carrier and I would take it with me into the store, etc.  It took up the entire basket if I wanted to go grocery shopping, so I started wearing him instead and found that to be a lot easier.  He sleeps on me just as well as he slept in the carseat and carrying him on me doesn't take up my whole basket.  The only time the infant carrier would be better is going out to eat.  If you plan on doing that a lot, you want an infant carrier because you don't want to hold the baby the whole time you eat.  We hardly ever out to eat (we've been twice since he was born and both were because we were out for his doctor's appointments), so it's not a big deal to us.  I put the convertible one in the car a few days ago and he likes it better.  He can see more, move his feet around more, and I don't have to lug the heavy carseat around with me anymore.  Also, with a csection, I could barely carry the infant seat at first because of how heavy it was.  I vote convertible and a Moby wrap (these things are awesome!)
