$1400 ? month for day care

Went to check out the day care at JCC and was given the above price tag. It works out to about $350/week (plus about $30 a month for the reduced JCC membership). I am a little bit surprised, as the day care looked extremely nice, but I did not see anything there for which I would want to pay a $100-$150/week premium over every other place out  there. It was nice--clean--no more. Or am I completely wrong and $350/week only buys you something decent in Oakland County? What does daycare cost these days in our area?

  • Peyton is only going to daycare part time, but if she were going full time, we would be paying 225/week.  This place really is fantastic too.  We could have found places for less money that would have been pretty good too.  I consider the place we are going top of the line (with my limited knowledge, keep in mind) so 350/week sounds a bit extreme to me...

  • Wow!  Yeah, that's extremely overpriced!  I'd say the average for a good daycare center is around $250/week.  When Noah was in daycare we were paying $47/day (granted this is in Macomb, but right on the outskirts of Rochester so prices tend to be similar).  We would have gotten a price break if he had him enrolled full-time.  The center was kept up nicely, had webcams in each room, plenty of toys, a large gym for indoor play as well as a private, gated outdoor play yard and had special keycards so they could keep the front door locked at all times.  I'd keep looking- I'm sure you could find something nice for a much cheaper price.

  • I priced out many daycares in Novi, Northville, South Lyon, and Farmington Hills.  The average price was $225/week.  The one exception was a new daycare in Lyon Township and it was just under $1300/month, which DH and I felt was outrageous.  I would say anything $250/week or below is a good price for an infant.

  • DS is currently going 3 days per week at an in-home daycare in B-ham. Cost is $150, will increase to $215 for next week once he goes full time and will decrease to $195 in a few months when he is 18 months old. Cost includes breakfast, lunch, and snack. We also researched a center in B-ham that was $246 per week for full time but did not provide meals. We thought we got more bang for the buck at the in-home center we chose. Anything over $250 per week is a rip-off in my opinion unless your child is literally receiving on-on-one care from the provider. Other than that, I can not see what more they can offer for more than that.
  • The daycare we're using is $210 a week full time or $60 a day if you want to go part time.  There is no way I would pay $350 a week for daycare - it's just too much in my opinion.

  • Did you go to the center in Oak Park or West Bloomfield?  I visited the one in Oak Park and I am pretty sure it was about $250 for a week.  They also didn't mention having to buy any sort of membership.  Maybe the West Bloomfield center is different.  I also only went for one visit, so maybe there are some details that I missed.  Regardless, that price seems excessive.

The Oak Park center we visited was nice, but I have seen nicer in my search and they were significantly cheaper.  There were a few that were NAEYC accredited and were not that expensive.  Also, we found several that serve meals.  We finally decided on one in Troy for $200 a week with breakfast, lunch, and snacks served.

  • JCC daycare is way overpriced, its suppose to be really good but not worth that much in my opinion

  • What are the JCC ratios?  To me, that's the most important thing.  If the ratios are the standard 1:4 or 1:3, then yes - totally overpriced.  I imagine those parents are falling into the "more expensive most mean better" trap.
  • My LO goes to a center in Royal Oak and we pay $200 a week plus they supply the diapers.  We visited a few others including some that were around $1400 and while they were nice facilities, I didn't feel that they would provide better service for the price.

Can you tell me the name of the center? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to share in the post! I'm in the Novi area as well and beginning to look - from what I have found so far, 225 is a good price, especially if it comes recommended! Thanks!

  • I think that they will give a discount if you can't afford that price.  Also, the price goes down as they get older.  We opted for in home daycare vs. the JCC b/c of the price.  there is a good one nearby, PM if you want the info b/c I will need to get it from a friend who sends her kids there.

FWIW, I've never paid more than $165/week for inhome and now at a Montessori preschool/daycare center in Walled Lake.

     I sent you a private message--thank you!

As to the rest of it... I suppose if we look around and find absolutely nothing decent around here for less money, we'll look into their scholarship as well. I'm having very serious doubts that we'll be able to affrod it even WITH a scholarship... We are looking to do about $900 a week, tops.

I think she said 1:3. They have 5 teachers for 15 infants, and two of those are dealing with non-crawlers. In general, I didn't see anything there that blew me away.

West Bloomfield. I don't know what d/c is like at the Oak Park JCC, but their facilities are really not that great, compared to WB. I used to live right next to it and have some familiarity with the place, though not for a while... So it's possible that WB is a little swankier and a lot more expensive.

That may sound idiotic, but I am really new to this. What is so special about the NAEYC accreditation?

  • Would you mind PM'ing me with your center's name? We are looking for full time daycare recommendations in Royal Oak for my 6mo son. Thanks!
