I am EBF and wondered when did you start offering a pacifier? My LO is one week old and I don't want to introduce it too early due to nipple confusion.
Both of my daughters had Soothie pacifiers the day they were born and we never had nipple confusion (both were EBF). We did, however, wait 3 weeks before we introduced a bottle of BM.
I did pacifier at three weeks, bottle at four. We are in week five now and DS has regressed and has forgotten how to nurse. I'm not sure if it's because of the bottle only, or both.
The (terrible) hospital we delivered at gave her the paci at 1 day old and never asked us...we only found out on day 3 when we were leaving, and the nurse said here give this to her if she's crying and then she stopped crying! haha
I should add that LO has never had any nipple confusion, she latched on as soon as she was born, she's had many different bottles (avent, enfamil disposable nipples, medela, thinkbaby, playtex) and many different pacifiers (playtex, MAM and the soothies that were offered at the hospital). She has a preference for the playtex bottles and soothies pacifiers clearly but takes anything that's given to her. I've heard that hospitals give the soothies bc it's closest to the nipple (or so my hospital claimed). Many hospitals also give the MAM but not sure what's the reason.
She had stopped taking the paci but then would use me as a paci lol...so I reintroduced it to her just for the sanity of my nipples lol.
I am EBF, but DD got both a bottle and a pacifier within the first 24 hours after birth. Since then she has regularly nursed, used both Avent and Soothies pacifiers, and taken a few different kinds of bottles. I think that the concerns with nipple confusion, etc. are very personal and apply differently to every child.
I've always heard one month or 4 weeks. I introduced it around 4 weeks. He's not too into them, so far. He only takes one when he's hungry and I need to do something before feeding him (like go to the bathroom or help older DS), or he also likes one when he's napping in the baby bjorn.
She's had a pacifier since about the 1st week. The pedi said not to worry about nipple confusion and it hasn't been an issue. Sucking is soothing and should be encouraged! We started a bottle of BM at 2 weeks and she's had no problems.
DS got a bottle at the hospital due to low blood sugar at birth (I had gestational diabetes, it took him a bit to sort his blood sugar) and he got a soothie pacifier the first night and the only nursing issue we ever had was my right nipple being flat, so I had to wear soft shells in my bra, which was no big deal, and he nursed like a champ, even with the feeding tube (had to supplement, he was/is a little piggy, my supply crashed though due to unknown causes, so now he's exclusively FF)
Hi, we gave our daughter a pacifier since birth. Sometimes she really likes it and sometimes she doesn't. NUK have been the best for her and we tried 4 different kinds. She will also take pretty much any type of bottle regardless of the nipple and never had any issue with nipple confusion but every baby is different. Hope it all goes well for you!
Around day 4 we finally found one she would take... the wubbanub kitty soothie just like pp. She gets really bad hiccups and that helps calm her down. As long as I'm not using it to replace feeding her, the health nurses think that it helps with sucking. So far..knock on wood she's doing pretty good with bfing.
With my ds we waited to introduce the soother, and the his bfing fell all apart, I don't know if there wasa correlation between the 2 but we will see. Bfing is still young at this point.
He actually had one in the hospital. He is a huge hand sucker so we gave him one to keep his hands out of his mouth since I would rather have a pacifier then his hands for him to suck on. He only really gets it during diaper changes to keep him from getting upset and spitting up, when he has hiccups, and whenever else he is showing a need to self soothe.
He also had bottles in the hospital too to supplement and we never have had problems with nipple confusion. DS can go from a bottle to breast with no problems.
We gave LO one after we got home from the hospital around day 4. He also has had bottles of BM since the first week and he has had no nipple confusion/trouble nursing.
