Anyone given birth at Gwinnett Medical?

I'm not a regular on this board, but I figured you ladies would know best.  Have any of you given birth at Gwinnett Medical?  My OB's office only delivers at Gwinnett Medical, and I tried researching a few things online, but couldn't find much info.

Can you tell me about your experience there?  Were all the rooms private, or were some shared?  Did they allow you to labor freely/walk around/take a hot shower?  Or did they force you to labor on the bed?  Did they let you eat during labor?

Thank you for any info you can share with me!

  • I gave birth at Gwinnett Medical and I had a good experience.  I suggest that you take one of the tours to see it for yourself.  The women's wing is seprate from the rest of the hospital and is really nice and new.  The labor rooms are private and comfortable.  Because I was hooked up to an IV with labor inducing meds I was not allowed to walk around.  It might be different if you are not being induced. There is even an area for the father to go get you juice, Popsicle, ice and so on.  I was allowed to eat because I was in labor so long.  My doctor wanted me to save my energy.  Once you give birth they will move you to a room upstairs.  The nursery is in the middle and the rooms are all around it.  Your baby will make it up there before you do and your family can watch their first bath.  After that the baby never leaves you.  All the post birth rooms are private too.  The post delivery rooms have gliders, soft beds, and a lactation consultant will come to see you.  The food was surprisingly good for hospital food.  I was there on a very busy night, had a difficult delivery, and every labor room was being used.   There is another board member here that was there at the same time! I never felt like I was being pushed out.  I had a bad experience with one nurse due to the IV in my hand and my nurse refused to change it at first.  But it hurt so bad that I started crying and she changed it right away.  All the other nurses did a great job and never had another problem.  I took the "traditional route" and had the epidural because I am a total pain wimp.  I did notice they had the big whirlpool tub for labor but I never got to use it.  Everything else went well.  My family seemed comfortable in the waiting rooms too.  Page me on the board if you have more questions.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience.  I'm only 15 weeks pg right now, so it's too soon for me to do the hospital tour.  My OB hasn't even mentioned it yet.  My OB did tell me about the tubs, and said we could labor in the tub, but not give birth in the tub.  This is fine with me.  I'm aiming for a med-free birth, though I know things may change at the last minute.

My experience was very similar to this.  I was also hooked up to induction IV's so I couldn't walk around but if I wanted to move to a chair in the room for a while the nurses were more than happy to help me around.  I believe lunch was my last full meal as they broke my water soon after. The food was really good and after 18 hrs of no food I recall those eggs being the best I'd ever tasted ;)

The nurses were great, very helpful and friendly.  If I ever needed anything I never had to wait long for it.  I remember I had an issue with my cath hurting after I got my epidural and they didn't question it, just took it out and put it back in to make sure it was done correctly.

I do recommend taking a tour for sure just to see what everything looks like and to familiarize yourself with the hospital but it really was a great experience. Like Yellowtulips, if you have any other questions let me know!

  • Hello this was such a great post. I hope that you don't mind me borrowing it since I'll be delivering at Emory Eastside. I'm 28 weeks and starting to get nervous and these are the questions that plage me at night. Thanks.
