When to bump up the formula..

My DD is 6 weeks old, will be 7 on Thursday. She had been eating 4 oz like clockwork every four hours. A few days ago I noticed she was screaming A LOT after I fed her the four oz, so I made two more and gave it to her and all was good. The next time I fixed her bottle, I put 4 1/2 oz in there and she ate it..

My question is how are we supposed to know if giving her 4 1/2 is the way to go EVERY time and not just some times?

Re: When to bump up the formula..

  • Basically trial and error. Make the 4.5oz for her next few bottles and see how she takes it. If you find that she's  that she's crying for more after every bottle, then you know you need to bump it up for every feeding.

  • I usually go from 4-5....I don't go by half ounces.

  • Its all demand.  After having to go back and make more you decide to make the next step up bottle.  We just finished a growth spurt and I can't tell you how many times we had to go back and add more to the bottles for a total of 6oz.  Now he's back to 3-4 ounces.
  • Thank you for the input!
