Re: been pumping and bfing for 6 weeks...

  • At the hospital the LC recommended using olive oil for sore nipples. I used that when I first started BFing and it helped.

  • Same here! :(

Only things that helps are the nipple cream I put on and letting my nipples dry after pumping before I put a bra on.

At the beginning of pumping my head throbs with each pump. At the beginning of BFing the nipples burn. As long as I get through the initial pain it gets better for the rest of the feeding/pumping.

  • i used o.o. in the beginning but it ended up clogging my montgomery ducts...maybe i'll try it a few times a day again instead of everytime

  • Not sure if it is painful or not, but I was having a sharp pain in my boobs when I was breastfeeding and it would linger a couple of minutes after breastfeeding or pumping and it turned out it was a candida infection. I got a prescription from dr for antifungal and made sure to wash my bras in hot water EVERY time I used them and it cleared up.  If it is your nipples being sore, have you tried Soothies?  Or airing out everytime you bf or pump?  I saw an advertisement for something better than Soothies the other day, I THINK on babygizmo.com, but not sure.  Hope that helps and good luck!  It is NOT normal for you to still be sore, so maybe talk to a LC if you can't figure it out.  Your hospital should have someone for you to talk to for free.  HTH!!!

  • I second going to the LC. I thought for sure the burning pain in my nipples was thrush. Went to the LC and turns out LO is slightly tongue tied and it's throwing off his latch. We have to make an appointment now to get it fixed, but she did show me some things that have helped in the meantime. The LC at our hospital cost me $100, but it was well worth it!

  • I was sore for longer than 6 weeks, maybe closer to 10 weeks. I had a cracked nipple so that was awful, but even on the side without the crack it was still painful. Being cold and nipping out was awful! But it did get better.... eventually.

same here...i EP and my nipples hurt so bad especially when I get cold and they get hard-ouch!  I have tried airing them out, I use lanolin and breast shells and they still hurt.  i would say the shells help the most but they still hurt.  much like pp, i feel sick when i first start bc it hurts so bad.

  • stick with it!  In a couple of months you will wonder if you will ever have feeling in your nipples again!
  • I BF'd & pumped for the first 5-ish weeks, and have since weaned.. but for me, it turned out that the nipple pain was due to having the wrong size breast shield for the pump. My nips were too big for the medium ones that came with the pump, and I had to order some XL ones. That did seem to help some. Also, when I was finished nursing or pumping, I would express a little more breastmilk, rub it on my nipples, and let it air dry (as per the LC's advice). That helped heal a couple cracks pretty quickly, and helped with the soreness a bit too. HTH!
