Baby Names

Colby

My maiden name is Coburn and we considered using that as a first name for our son, with the nickname Coby, but I think it was just too much of a stretch for us. So hubby and I had tossed around the name of Colby and really liked it.

The only problem is we had a family dog for about 5 years that was named Colby. He's been gone for about 4 years. It's pure coincidence, my parents named the dog that because of the guy on Survivor, and we want to name our son that  because of the slight connection to my maiden name. I can get over the same name thing--I see it as people will comment "Wasn't that your parent's dogs name?" when they first hear it, and after a month of calling a baby Colby, they'll forget about it. But my mom and sisters can't get over it and think we shouldn't do it.

Opinions please. :)

Re: Colby

  • I remember your Coburn nn Coby post. I like that name very much! I am not personally a fan of Colby or of kids sharing names with pets. Maybe there's another C-name out there you might love? I suggest these sites for you:

    Best of luck deciding. :)

  • 1. I think it would be odd to name your son the same name as a family pet.

    2. Cheese.

  • I think Its really weird to name your son the same name your dog had. I remember your other post and I reallllly love the idea of Coby as a NN for your maiden name. It's cute and different without being to out there.

I agree. If you really like your maiden name what about a MN? Both of my aunt's kids have her maiden as middle names, and her maiden name is clearly a surname.

  • I remember your original post and really like the use of Coburn (Coby).  There is a major road in my city named Colbern, but most people around here don't pronounce the "L" so it sounds like Coburn.  "We" would probably do the same thing with the name Colby and it would end up being Coby anyway...
  • Personally, I like all ur choices :) Colby really isnt that bad of a name. Yes, it's a town, a cheese, and the name of ur passed dog, but if u like it, go for it.

    But that's just MHO
