Heartburn sufferers come in please

I know there have been a few posts about this - but I never opened them, as I didn't have it before.  I've been feeling sick the last few days, and therefore haven't been eating a lot of substance food (just a lot of apple juice and the occasional muffin).

Now I'm suffering from heartburn - BAD.  I still am having trouble eating solids - would a milkshake for dinner be a horrible idea? Or might it help?  I still have three tums I can eat today, but since its worse at night, I want to save two for later. Would a fruit smoothie be better?

Other than that - what are your foods that help heartburn (for future reference), and foods that make it worse?

  • Tums, milk, frozen yogurt and (weird, I know) yellow mustard make me feel better, while caesar dressing, pesto, marinara and any tomato make me feel worse.  Tacos are off limits for the rest of the pregnancy!! :)

  • I feel your pain!

I've had occasional heartburn before I got pregnant, so I know what to avoid.  Overall, there are a number of foods to stay away from, if you want to reduce the chances of getting heartburn. Try to limit tomatoes (and tomato products), citrus fruits, carbonated drinks and mint.

I find that a glass of cold milk often helps if I'm feeling the burn. I think the pH of the stomach gets neutralized by the basic nature of milk.

    Good luck and feel better!

  • I had mild heartburn before I got pregnant but now I wake up and go to bed with heartburn. I swear I could blow fire if I tried. Regardless of what I eat I get heartburn. So far this is what I have found that helps

3 tablespoons of mylanta before bed, a glass of milk, ice cream, frozen yogurt and lots of water. 2-3 tums as needed

The water doesn't help prevent the heartburn but if its cold enough it chills the burn out for a little while.  The tums aren't working as well anymore but the Ice Cream is happiness.

I've tried Cottage Cheese, String Cheese, Yogurt and pudding w/ Whip Cream thinking that they're all in the dairy family and the Calcium should combat the heartburn.. But those didn't work for me I also tried a fruit smoothie and that didn't seem to work well.

In all honesty, go with the milkshake

  • Nothing food wise works for me.  I take a pepcid or zantac and it usually goes away within a half hour.

  • Tums are my best friend!!  Milk will work sometimes, but not all the time.  My doctor said that Zantac are safe, but so far Tums have worked well enough.  She also recommended not eating two-three hours before bedtime and elevating my head when I sleep.

  • Honestly I am taking 2 Zantac a day (8 am and about 3 pm) and tums as needed.

Per my OB you really don't need to ration them too much.

  • ZANTAC

It's the only thing that can cut my 3rd tri heartburn - I can't live without it (I think I'd burn a hole in my throat if I refrained from taking it). It just works.

  • Yep, Zantac works.  Even water gives me reflux these days.

  • I love you ladies.  Milkshake it is, and Zantac is now on my shopping list.

  • I had horrible heartburn 1st tri, so bad that the acid literally burned my esophogus and caused me to vomit blood. Long story short I was in the hospital, and the doc gave me a list of foods not to eat to avoid the heartburn.

    Do Not Eat:
Citrus fruits (try to avoid fruit in general if you can)
Tomato based products (chili, sloppy joes, spaghetti, ketchup, pizza)
    Milk
    Mint
    Chocolate
    Spicy food
    Butter

Take: Mylanta (liquid, mint flavored goes down best) Tums, and Zantac

Don't eat or drink past 6pm so that you can sleep at night without heartburn pains.

It sucks the big one but thats what got me through the 1st tri.

  • Really cold water can make it worse for me.  I've been using tums and zantac.  I have also heard that apple cider vinegar
  • Zantac has been a GODSEND!!!

And tomatoes have been giving me the worst reflux/heartburn.

Not only would I faint from low blood sugar the next morning, but I would also be STARVING by the time I was allowed to eat (I have to wait an hour after taking a morning pill) because I can only eat tiny meals.  That does so much more than sucking the big one, I'm not even sure there are words.

that was my doc's orders to me...maybe try not eating 2 or 3 hrs before you go to bed. so that the acids in your stomach can settle down.
