Thoughts on Lupron being kept in the refrigerator?

I know this is something which some do and others don't, but what do you do with your Lupron?

Every time I've been on Lupron I have kept the vial in the refrigerator.  I am thinking ahead to the next two weekends when I'll be traveling, and what a pain in the butt it is to keep the vial cool during travel, and then getting a refrigerator into my hotel room to store it while away.

Perhaps I should ask a pharmacist?  Check with Dr. Google?

  • I just kept it room temp the whole time.

As an FYI, the pharmacy stores it at room temp...so there is really no reason to put it the fridge unless you want to.

  • My Lupron says on the label to refrigerate so that's what I do.

  • I've never refrigerated Lupron. My RE office does not either. My pharmacy told me it didn't need to be refrigerated unless I was vacationing in hot climates.

  • As long as it's kept below 77 degrees, it should be ok. The last 2 times I used it I kept it out on the counter and never thought about it. This time starting IVF I asked the nurse about it. She told me it's ok as long as it isn't by the radiator. I just got too paranoid and now keep it in the fridge. I would ask the pharmacist if I were you.

I store mine in the fridge until I open it (so most of my meds are together) and then at room temp.

    Thanks ladies!

Well, there is generic and brand-name. Generic meds can have multiple manufacturers, although I'm not sure if this is the case w/Lupron.

WRT why the instructions differ, maybe it depends on who made it. I think refrigeration used to be standard, and sometimes manufacturers don't update their directions.

For IVF#1 I was told to refrigerate, but after I forgot one night I was also told it was no big deal. For IVF #2, they said below 77 degree was fine.

  • I never kept mine in the fridge but I made sure it didn't get too hot.  GL!

  • i work for a urologist group and we give lupron to men with prostate cancer.  we don't have it in vials, so not sure if that changes the advice, but ours is kept in a cabinet, not a fridge.  we have the kind that is in a syringe with a needle on it already.  there is powder in the top and water in the bottom, you just push the plunger up to mix both together and then administer the shot.  i've never seen it in a vial.

  • I never kept mine in the fridge.   During our last fresh cycle, I took it with us on vacation.  I had no issues and suppressed normally.  As long as it doesn't get exposed to/kept in extreme heat or cold I think it's OK.

  • We did. It's where the Gonal F was too and it just seemed better to keep it all together. We did take it out a little early to let it warm up a bit.

  • I was told to refrigerate my lupron but accidentally left it out at room temp one morning before going to work.  I realized it during the day and called my nurse to see if I should start a new vial.  She said it's not a big deal at all and the only reason to refrigerate it is to prevent bacterial growth on the under side of the rubber stopper, which she said with proper cleaning with the alcohol swabs is very unlikely.

    Enjoy your travelling lady!
