2nd time moms- might it be possible?

After battling all week to even have my son sit on the toilet, he tells me he needs to poop, proceeds to sit on the toilet and actually poop. It was amazing!

He is 2.5 and my DH and I both work full time.

Do you think it is even possible to have him potty trained before LO arrives in May?

  • Thats exciting, he just might be potty trained when #2 arrives. Sounds like a great start.

  • It is a good start, but don't force it!  If he has an accident, tell him its okay and comfort him, but say next time he needs to get to the toilet in an encouraging manner.

Also, lose the pull ups all together, sure there will be messes, but it will be uncomfortable for him and he will quickly learn to go to the toilet.

Make this a big step for him and let him pick out some big boy underwear to wear, thomas the train or spiderman, whatever, let him choose. DD didn't want to make hers 'dirty' with poop.

Buy a bed protector and let him wear his underwear to bed, but be ready to change the sheets in the night. He will learn.  Some children wet the bed until 4 or 5 it can be due to bladder size and lack of control, not the child's fault.

I think it took a week of messes for DD to get it, then the occasional mess.  She started the process at 2 1/2.

Also, when you are away from the house, make sure he knows where the bathroom is, and that he can ask you or whoever is with him for help.  It can be confusing for them, even after months with no accidents.

Hope this helps, if you want more advice or have specific questions let me know.

    Sorry for the novela.

  • I hope it works because it is my goal to have my son potty trained before the baby gets here... he has been telling us when he needs to poop and sitting on the regular toilet, and actually going, but has not shown any interest in telling us when he pees.

during easter break, I am going to do the 3 day potty training method.  fingers crossed.

  • That's incredible, go with it! my dd will be exactly 2 yrs 6 months when #2 is born and she is not ready yet.  She likes to just sit on the potty, thinks its fun, ha!

We both work full time too but my babysitter is working on pt'ing too.

i hope he stays trained before the baby, lots of luck!

  • Maybe! DD didn't get PT'ed until she was 3 months shy of turning 3YO. PT'ing may have clicked for him or it may have been a fluke. You won't know until you keep trying! But, even if it does look like he's trained, be prepared for some regression.
Our DD will have been PT'ed for over a year when Baby Boy comes and I wonder how she will be after he arrives.

  • Potty training seems to go 2 steps forward, 1 step back for a lot of kids.  They'll do really well one week and then have a lot of accidents the next week.  So keep encouraging it but don't be upset if he's one of those kids that takes longer.  On the other hand, it might just click for him.

I have zero hope of my daughter being PT by the time this baby is born.  I'm just hoping she gets it by age 3 (she's 2.5 now).

  • DS started peeing in the potty around 20 months and I thought "this is it!"  He refused to poop in the potty for ages, though!  Then, several weeks ago, he just started using the toilet all the time.  It just clicked.  You never know when it will happen, but I hope it happens for you before baby arrives.

  • Sounds like a good start.  Not to be a downer, but my daughter was 2.5 and she started to do that, but she wasn't fully potty trained until she was already FOUR!!! She was 100% pee trained for over a year before I considered her "potty trained", but she couldn't care less about getting her princess underpants dirty.  I think we pushed her too hard when she was younger and she just wasn't ready/interested.  We stopped pushing it on her and she did it all on her own.

  • This baby is my first, but my friends tell me that almost all of their kids who were PT before the next one came along reverted back to diapers after the baby arrived. Even the ones who were PT for over a year.  That sounds like I am being a downer...hopefully this won't happen for you!

I'm fully expecting this. I have a friend whose son had been potty trained for 6 solid months before the baby came along, and he reverted too!

  • Iris hit the nail on the head where we're concerned.  DD will go 4 days w/o a single accident, and then have 4 accidents in one day.  I've learned to just go with the flow, LOL, no pun intended.  She is actually MUCH better when we're out of the house than when we're home.  She rarely has an accident when we're out and about.  It's bizarre.  I will say, however, that Pull Ups ARE our friend, and I swore I'd never use them but DD had a really hard time w/ accidents in underpants--to the point that she'd cry hysterically if she had an accident and be afraid to pee or poop altogether.  It was not motivating to her to not have accidents in them, it petrified her--and I promise you, I've never scolded her once for an accident, she just loves them so much that when she peed in them it devastated her.  So as with anything else, do what works for your little guy--when you figure it out, you'll figure it out.  What works for one doesn't work for another.

  • My DD took to potty training very quickly. She still wears a pull-up at night but it took her a week or two to go underwear full time besides bedtime.
