Falling asleep when eating?

For the last couple days, A has been falling asleep during his feedings. He is wide awake when he starts eating and halfway into the bottle (we're EPing) he falls asleep and refuses to wake up to finish. We've tried getting him naked, wiping him with a cold wipe, tickling his feet, and just bothering him in general and he will not.wake.up. However, since he's only finishing half his bottle (1.5 - 2 oz - he'd been eating 3 - 4 oz per feeding previously) he wakes up on his own to finish 5 - 30 minutes later. This has been problematic since I am usually pumping at that time and have to either stop pumping or listen to him scream until I'm done. It's stressing me out and messing with my supply. Plus I'm worried that he's so sleepy - he hasn't been this way since he was just born and still slightly jaundiced. Is this normal or should I be concerned? Any tips for helping keep him awake?

Re: Falling asleep when eating?

  • My son falls asleep also in the middle of a feeding and when I was at the hospital they said that it might be bc he's too warm and they had me undress him and flick his feet to wake him up. How often are you feeding? Perhaps the baby isn't that hungry and you could wait an extra hour to feed. Thats just a thought. I know they were saying that jaundice can affect a baby with breast-feeding, so perhaps contact your pedi and ask them

  • 3-4 oz seems like a lot for a 3 week old. When DD was that age we were EPing and she was only taking 2.5oz. She's 2 months now and her bottles are still only 3.5oz. Maybe 2oz is all he really needs at a time. Have you checked with your pedi?
