Category C meds

Anyone use a category C medicine?  My Dr. gave me a prescription for a medicine to treat a yeast infection I didn't even know I have.  When I looked it up online tonight it says Category C...is this ok?

Re: Category C meds

  • Was it your OB that gave you the prescription? If so, I would imagine it's ok. Did you read the warnings/instructions for the medicine? Does it say anything about being pregnant?

  • category B is better but category C things are still safe according to my dr.. he said that there is less to worry about this far along (i am due 6/29)
  • Category C means that there haven't been enough human trials to confirm or deny a correlation between the drug and fetal defects/pregnancy complications in people, however some animal trials have shown a possible correlation.

This far along in your pregnancy, there's not a lot of defects that can be caused by a cat c drug. The baby's organs are formed already, as well as all vital structures.

Unless it's something that's going to cause contractions/preterm labour, if your doctor prescribed it, I would assume you'll be fine to take it.

  • I have been on a category C medication since 8 weeks prego for my blood pressure.  Baby appears to be just fine.  If your OB prescribed it for you, I am sure it will be ok..... :)
  • yes my ob prescribed it.  The package insert said not to take if in the first trimester.   But I am in my second so I assume it is ok.
