f/u re: Allergic to nipple shield??

Hi all,

I posted Monday about the rash on LO's face and since facial bumps seem to be a hot topic today I thought I'd post an update. (Original Post with Pic Here) I happened to mention it in my new mother's group on wed and one of the moms there happened to be a dermatologist!!! She looked at DD's skin and the horrible picture I posted here and said it's most likely eczma, but there are patches that could be seb derm. Easy fix: vaseline to moisturize (which she prefers to aquaphor since some newborns are allergic to the lanolin), warm mist humidifier in LO's room, and 1% hydrocortisone optional but probably not necessary. Well I've been latering her up and had the humidifier on high and her skin looks soooo much better. I'm thrilled.

She also said it's CRAZY that they would think she was allergic to the nipple shield. Clearly they were just grabbing at straws. I couldn't believe my luck that a dermatologist just happened to be there, it was such a relief!

  • I'm so glad there's a way to treat it!  I saw your OP and my DS has the same thing, I think.  I called the nurse on Mon and she said baby acne, but I'm starting to suspect eczema, because it's spreading and seems rough and dry, not so much like pimples.  Plus my older DS has mild eczema on his arms.  Little DS has 2 mo check up  on Monday.  I'm really looking forward to getting the doc to look at it and recommend treatment.  The poor little guy is so itchy that it sometimes distracts him from nursing.

I totally agree with her! I responded to your post. I'm a pediatric dermatology PA and I was thinking seb derm (eczema and seb derm overlap a little bit)...but seb derm is usually more bumpy than eczema. I thought it was strange to be allergic to a silicone nipple shield. I posted pics of DS's face and chest too. I use an Rx steroid cream and right now his face is completely clear. So I would use the hydrocortisone cream if I were you!
