Any more ultrasounds?

I am a bit of a lurker and a first time mom, due May 19th.  At my anatomy scan, the technician said she was 'pretty sure' the baby was a girl.  We had to have a f/u scan a few weeks later and we heard the same thing - they couldn't get a good picture, but the doctor said she saw other signs of the baby being a female, so we went with that.

Now, I'm starting to get nervous.  I don't think my doctor normally does another ultrasound.  I will ask when I go next week, but I doubt it - any thoughts?

Also, if this were you (and you were having a big baby shower with A LOT of pink things) would you go to an ultrasound place to double-check?  I would have to pay out of pocket, plus I don't want to do any more ultrasounds than necessary.

I appreciate your input!

  • If you've already told people it's a girl, and you're having a "girl" themed baby shower... but doubt that you're actually having a girl... I would pay for the elective ultrasound, unless you don't mind making a ton of store returns if in fact your dr is wrong.

It sounds like you want the peace of mind to me, even though u/s aren't always 100% right at determining boy/girl no matter how far along you are when you have them

EDIT - peace not piece ;) oops!

  • If it is bothering you, I would pay for an elective u/s. You *may* get a growth u/s later on, but it really is up to your doctor's discretion. I'm getting an elective 3D u/s just for fun, and my OB and MW thought it was fine.

  • That's a tough call. I had an appt today and asked the doctor if I should expect another u/s at any point and she said she will do one at around 36 weeks IF she thinks she needs to check on the baby's growth - but otherwise, no. If you're not convinced it's a girl (what other signs did they see that made them come to that conclusion?) it might be worth the additional scan. But if they were "pretty sure" twice, then I'd say you're probably ok. Easy for me to say - I got a clear 3 lines in mine. I'd probably be nervous, too, if I were in your shoes!

  • On our anatomy scan, she was pretty small, but they were pretty sure she was a girl. On a follow up scan, she wasn't in a good position, but the tech said there were no signs of her being a boy.

I was still worried at first (especially since 2 of my friends were "supposed" to have girls and ended up having boys) but I'm going to paint her room girly and get girly clothes. If she comes out as a boy, I can always re-paint and exchange the clothes, just make sure you keep the tags.

  • If it was me i would def spend a lil money to Def make sure it was a girl or a boy.

Especially if i knew i was going to have a baby shower ahead of time ( it would be such a pain if i found out in the end i had to do a whole bunch of exchanges, or sell things cuz i couldn't exchange them)

Im also a big planner and i hate yellow and green.

  • I think I should go for it, just for the peace of mind.  Thanks!
  • I'm getting another for medical reasons but I fully plan on asking while I'm there because we heard the same thing. "We're pretty sure its a girl but she's keeping her legs closed, etc."

We've already told everyone its a girl anyway. If I find out on Tuesday its not I will be very surprised. They usually don't say either gender until they are pretty certain about it.

  • I was in your same situation and I decided to pay for the elective ultrasound (last week).  And it's a girl :)

  • I'm getting a 3d ultrasound on the 12th for fun and so my family can be there although I'm pretty sure that he's a boy already.  ^_~  It would be a MAJOR surprise if little Davy is a girl.
