I went to my 31 wk appt on wed and the dr was concerned that I was measuring 4 weeks ahead.. my urine was a mess. High levels of sugar, protein, and white blood cells.
They did a random blood draw and today told me that I do not have GD (I failed the 1 hour at 24 wks, and aced the 3 hour at 25 wks) but I have something called impaired glucose tolerance.
I have a growth US on tuesday and an appt with a nutritionist on wedneday. Has anyone else been diagnosed with this or familiar with this?
Re: Anyone familiar with impaired glucose tolerance?
Yes!
And I had the devil of a time trying to find out info about it before my appointment!
I was given this diagnosis after failing the 1 hr and 2 hr GTT tests. (They don't do a 3 hr here) I failed the 2 hr with 8.9, and the cutoff was 8.8.
Anyway they treat it exactly like gestational diabetes here. They have you test your blood sugar and follow the diabetic diet and you're followed by a diabetic doctor. Since its not fully diabetes you can probably control it with diet alone, and not need insulin. I am doing fine on diet alone and don't even need to test every day.
I don't know how familiar you are with diabetes, but the diet is not too bad, just low carb, spead your carbs throughout the day to keep sugar levels stable. I eat 3 meals plus 2-3 snacks. And very little sugar, but certain artifical sweeteners are fine, like aspartame and splenda. High fat foods can block insulin, but that doesn't seem to be a problem for me. I stick to grain breads and high fibre foods when I can. White bread is bad for me.
One good thing about IGT vs GD is my dr said she won't try and induce me early or anything like can happen with GD. Its really like mild diabetes. And it should go away after pregnancy just like GD.
Thank you so much for your reply. I feel like no one has heard about this, and it definitely does not seem as common as GD.
I hope that it is easy as eating low sugar/carb foods. I meet with a nutritionist on Wednesday. I have to say that I stopped googling it after I saw that it causes poor labor, huge babies, premature membrane rupture among other things. I was hoping it wasnt this serious.
I was worried that it might cause her to come early, i am glad to hear that might not be the case. My doctor was a funny lady tho warning me not to eat any cake or anything that tastes good at my shower on saturday
Thanks again for the information!
No worries! I'm a pretty lurky person usually, but I hate to see something I can help with go ignored, especially when I had so much trouble finding info. If you're brave enough to contunue googling try "impaired glucose tolerance of pregnancy".
Don't let the internet freak you out, its not so bad. Like GD it needs to be controlled, but in general is less serious. Its basically a less severe version of the same problem.
GL with it. And enjoy your shower- just load up on the veggie tray!
