I'm PG with my 2nd & I clearly remember with my 1st, the thing that bugged me the most was when my mom & sons gma would tell me to just breathe. I wanted to punch someone in the face every time they told me this! haha It was so awful! I didn't go to Lamaze & didn't want to do any types of breathing exercises. All I wanted was to deal with the pain in my own way! I had an epi but now that I remember how much pain I had I don't think it worked as well as it does for most. I will make that 100% clear this time but I just thought it was funny that I remember that being the most annoying thing ever.
So what got to you most in the delivery room? (& how can I avoid it)
Re: In the delivery room, what bugged you the most?
It was the blood pressure cuff for me. I had to keep it on the whole time due to pre-e but it was awful during hard contractions.
I had a c-section but before that I was fully prepared to rip anyone's head off that started the "pushpushpushpushpush" crap.

What is it with those hospital blood pressure cuffs?? I had my blood pressure taken at a half-dozen different offices during pregnancy, including the L&D triage room, and none of them were remotely as painful and uncomfortable as the one in my recovery room. I think even the one they had on me during my actual C-section was better, too.
It was both the cuff and being thirsty for me. Course I don't really remember much between 3 cm and 8cm, and then things moved to fast to keep up!
I could hardly feel my contractions due to the epi and my nurse was supposed to tell me when i was having one and when to push. She was a sweet nurse and was very chatty, but she was also chatty during my delivery. So chatty in fact that I kept missing contractions because she wasn't paying attention. I'm not really sure who she was talking to because I wasn't listening to her and neither was my husband or the doctor. I bet you I missed 8-10 contractions because of her..
The blood pressure cuff sucked. I hadn't slept in 24hrs so the epi was sweet relief and all I wanted to do was sleep. Every 30 min or so that darn thing would squeeze me so tight I shot straight up in bed. Stupid thing..
I had my son during a blizzard, in a room with no windows, so that drove me insane! I kept getting annoying updates of "you should see the snow out there..", Yeah I cant since im tied to this bed in a room with no windows. But the biggest thing that got me was the BD's parents not only being at the hospital (he was not around the entire pregnancy, nor were his parents very supportive) but in my freaking room. Initially I thought it was nice of them to see how I was doing, but when they stuck around for longer than 10 minutes while I was dying from contractions I got very annoyed. I had to get nasty with then when they didn't get my hints to leave.
Oh and the BP cuff, the lack of water, and being in labor for 30 hours with no food.
I had acid reflux/heartburn and they were supposed to be bringing me some medicine, but I was progressing so fast that the nurse kept forgetting. She told me that I wouldn't like it anyhow and most patients don't end up taking it, but once I got it it was the best stuff ever because then I could deal with the contraction pain instead of my chest pain. Next time I will bring my own Tums.
I also hated being told to "push through the pain." Following my husband's Lamaz style breathing patterns did actually help though.
P.S. They had to keep the blood pressure cuff on once I got an epidural and my arm was actually bruised for a week. Next time I will loosen it when the nurse isn't in the room. And speaking of the epidural, my hospital will do them at any time, but the nurse told me after I was already at 10cm that it was too late. An hour later when DD still wasn't born, they offered me the epidural. You mean I dealt with that for an hour for nothing!?
So I guess in retrospect it was the nurse that bugged me most.
Nothing really bothered me.. except for the BP cuff. I didn't have any problems with my BP.. but just it always being on my arm, and getting really tight (and I have small arms) was super annoying.
One thing though, when we were checking in at the front desk (to be sent to triage), the lady and my husband were some how related and she started getting chatty with me. I wanted to punch her.. can't you see I'm in labor here lady.
It would be annoying to have a nurse that didn't get you what you asked for, especially the Epi! haha I remember I kept loosening mine too!
I couldn't imagine the BD's parents coming by, how awkward! I don't think my LO's BD has even told his parents so I hope I don't have to worry about that!

My epi made me itch like a b!tch! The meds they gave me to stop the itching made me nauseaous. I was finally just given Benadryll and life was gooooood!!
I was induced with a balloon and pitocin drip and didn't want pain meds. One very obnoxious nurse kept pressuring me to get an epidural as though it were some type of requirement.
Oh, and the blood pressure cuff sucked! I was in labor for 26 hours and never slept b/c of that d@mn thing.
Things that annoyed me:
#1. Not being checked for progress at all between 9:30 a.m and 5:30.
#2. Having to sit still while they had the monitor on my belly. So. Often.
Besides that I'd say I had a great experience. DH was pretty amazing and so was my mom while she was in the room.
Three things:
It took my rookie nurse FOUR tries to get my IV in. She finally had to put it in my hand, which made it really painful to use my hands to help prop myself up in bed after surgery, or really do anything with that hand.
Secondly, they were doing some sort of major construction project on the floor above me at 3am no less. Going through labor and having to listen to constant loud banging noises at the same time=seriously annoying.
And finally, by the time I had my emergency C, I had been in labor for 33 hrs, awake for over 2 days and I was STARVING. It was so nice watching DH and my parents bringing food back from the cafeteria multiple times because they were soooo hungry. Grrr!
I had a hard time pushing because my epi wore off in spots but not in others. The pain up high in my chest was pulling my focus from pushing down low. So, my OB was pushing really hard inside where he wanted me to push. I know it was probably helpful, but at the time, I wanted to kick him in the face.
I second the chatty nurses during delivery annoyance too. My nurse kept turning away or chatting and I often had to hold my leg on her side at the beginning of a contraction because she wasn't paying attention.
The blood pressure cuff sucked asss!
LO kept "running" away from the heartbeat monitor. They'd get her on it, then 2 minutes later they were back to find her h/b again. She did NOT like that thing "touching" her. She'd move away from it every.single.time. So it was pretty annoying having the nurses come in ever 5 minutes to readjust that thing.
I knew I shouldn't have let my mother in the room. I will NEVER hear the end of the fact that the doctor had to use the vacuum to get LO out. Never. (she's very pro-natural, home delivery birth. Anti doctor/hospital birth). Needless to say she will not be there next time.
This. Not so much due to contractions though but because it is not necessarily too comfortable having your BP continuously taken over the course of hoooours. That and it was a pin when I was trying to lay on my side to get comfortable.
With #1, it was H's snoring. It pissed me off SO much. He slept through the entire unmedicated portion of my labor.
With #2, nothing really bugged me.
With #3, the failed epidural was the biggest issue. Then no one seemed to believe that the epi wasn't working. I had to keep my eyes shut to deal with the pain and the TV was on and that suddenly drove me nuts. Oh, and at the beginning of my labor, the stupid antibiotics bugged me. That sh!t BURNS. After the delivery was over, I was soooooooooooo itchy. It was awful.
I had the BP cuff on for an entire WEEK... the three days prior to delivery (when they were still deciding whether to induce me due to pre-e), and then the four days until I was discharged. And looking back, I should have been vocal about getting a cuff that FIT. They claimed that they were using the biggest cuff, but it popped off my upper arm every time they tried it there (basically every time the shift changed)... when it popped off, the nurse on duty then put it on my forearm and left it there. I'm a big girl, but there is no way in HELL that I'm the biggest person to ever go through there needing a blood pressure reading. There HAD to be a bigger cuff somewhere... and come to find out, a too-small cuff can seriously alter your reading.
Other pet peeve - when they started the induction, I was in a huge L&D suite with living room area and huge bathroom with a huge walk-in shower. BUT... I was confined to bed because I was hooked up to mag sulfate, and had to pee in a bedpan...so I couldn't use said large bathroom. Then when I was transferred to my post-partum room after the eventual c-section, it was a tiny 10x15 potential double room with a tiny bathroom with tiny 2x2 shower stall. I can't move much in a 2x2 shower stall normally, never mind right after a c-section! And the toilet was so close to the wall that when you sat down, the toilet paper holder jabbed into your side. When using that bathroom, you couldn't NOT touch everything in the process because it was so tiny - I would have flipped sh!t if I ended up with a roommate and her postpartum bathroom disgustingness all over that bathroom too!
