Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Diaper size

I'm sorry - I feel like this is a really stupid question, which should be intuitive, but I want your opinions.

How do you know when do go up a size in diapers.  Newborn diapers seem to still fit my 6week old well by the looks of them.  But about every other day, she will have one diaper where poop comes up the back, and gets all over her clothes.  I had just sorta thought this was "normal" for babies, but have recently wondered if it means the diapers are too small.

Thanks!

Re: Diaper size

  • Ellie is 7 weeks today and bordering between newborns and size 1s. For us the newborns started looking too low in the back and now she seems to really soak them at night. The size 1s still seem too big but they don't leak as often and cover more of her body.

  • I always go up a size when she gets red marks around her thighs
  • We move DS when the amount of poosplosions increases, especially in diapers that normally work well to contain them. We tried to finish off the last of our size 1s last week but when he covered himself in poop and leaked through his onesie, outfit, and onto my pants, I decided to cut our losses and go right to the size 2s!

  • He peed out of the NB and pooped out of the 1's. However, he's in 2's and about 3 times per week poops out of them too so I dunno ????? Although, I think being in a sitting position means the poop slips out of the side so I think that's really the bigger issue.

There are weight recommendations on the boxes for each size - so if you aren't sure you can look at that.

As for the red marks, no matter what, my chunker's legs get red marks!

Sometimes it's inevitable, but do you make sure you pull out the little side flaps/ruffles/whatever your particular diaper has to cover more? I didn't do that at first and had more leaks as a result...learned my lesson!
