Babies: 0 - 3 Months

16 year olds (just a rant really..)

My friends 16 year old sister is pregnant, and beyond excited about the arrival of this baby. I can understand her excitement because this is going to be her child, and realistically its much healthier for her to be excited about the baby than depressed, upset, resentful, etc. However, I am absolutely annoyed by her level of excitement, and how out of touch with reality she is. First of all, shes convinced this baby is a boy because she took a gender prediction test at 10 weeks, shes now 12 weeks and has decided to name him Bentley (she liked Maci for a girl...hmm 16 and pregnant?) now all she does is spend her babysitting money (I am serious, babysitting on the weekends is her job) on Polo's and Timberland boots for the baby, and hasnt bought a single useful item. Ashley (her sister) and I have told her several times that she should focus on the essentials, and not worry about her baby looking "fresh", but shes still in dreamland about being a mom. She recently landed a "permanent" weekend babysitting job for a family in her neighborhood, and is excited because now she will not have to pay for childcare. This is just insane to me that her idea of parenting all stems from watching Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant. She has no idea what shes in for, and keeps brushing off any advice we give her. Seriously MTV has ruined the lives of so many young girls by promoting things like Teen Mom.

Rant over.

  • I question the parents hiring a pregnant 16 year old for a permanent baby sitting position. What happens when the baby comes in a few months. Do they really think a 16 year old can handle an infant and their older children alone?

Hell, I'm 25 and caring for an infant is hard on me and it's just one!

  • It is annoying to me the different perspectives people have when watching 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom.  I watch it and I see (in most of the situations) boys who get girls to sleep with them, get them pregnant, treat them like crap, and then leave them when the baby comes.  The girl is then left alone, has all this stress, can barely finish school, struggles to enroll in college, cannot go out with friends anymore, etc.  I see that and I think that teens should see how hard it can be to raise a child, etc. and try to be more responsible.  I really don't see the "glory" in the show.  Anyway I am 24 and can see the world more clearly than a teenager so maybe that is why I see what I see when I watch the show.  However, when I think back about myself as a teenager I know that I would have felt the same way about the situation and I could clearly see that *most* of the boys end up leaving you and the baby and can do whatever they want...you are the one tied down.  I think I was a pretty mature teenager though....

  • I think its crazy to have a show about teen pregnancy thats as popular as Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant. I've read that the girls on Teen Mom get paid about $60,000 for a season! They're on every tabloid magazine and being treated like celebrities just because they got pregnant as "kids" It shows young girls that they can be famous too just by having a baby. Its scary to see what more is going to come from these shows.
