BF question --- help

I know this might be a stupid question but I dont know what it is or if it is normal.

I EP, and I just noticed while pumping that the top left half of my breast is hard on top. It doesnt hat all. Actually  the only thing is that my left nipple has been sore today but Ive been pumping a lot more in last few days because Ive been having a lower supply. Im hoping its not an infection because I cant get to my OB til Monday.

Anyone have any answers?

Re: BF question --- help

  • Sometimes that happens to me too.  I don't know for SURE what it is (since I've only been BF'ing for 2 wks!) but it seems like it might be a clogged duct.  It always seems to resolve itself after a hot shower and either pumping or nursing.

This has happened to me. Just make sure you fully empty the breast. Also massaging the breast while you pump will help get the milk out fully.

  • Someone told me to put a warm cloth on top of it while pumping...

  • I've had this happen many times. If I lay a warm cloth or this bean bag thing I have on my breast for about 5 minuets before I pump, the milk comes pouring out!  Rubbing the hard spot while pumping also helps me get more milk out.  Good luck...don't give up!!

I noticed when i was massaging it and kind of leaning downward  after i was pumping that I got another ounce and half. It feels a little better. Still somewhat hard but when I pump again Im going to try the warm cloth thing.

If its still not better by my appt on Monday , I ask the OB about it.

  • It's probably a clogged duct.  Try a warm compress and massaging it while pumping.  Some people turn the pump up to a little more suction.  I had it once and it went away in a few days.
