breastflow vs. standard bottles?

I got the first years BreastFlow bottles as I initially started with BF. I also got some standard Gerber and Nuk bottles at my baby shower. For some reason I really feel like J sucks down the formula in the BreastFlow bottles and takes FOREVER to eat out of the standard bottles. Are the BreastFlow bottles made differently? And does anyone know when you can switch from slow flow to medium flow nipples?

Re: breastflow vs. standard bottles?

  • BreasfFlow are supposed to mimic breastfeeding (obviously)--the double nipple is supposed to make LO suck and compress rather than just suck, so technically the BF bottles should take longer. I don't know how long you've had them, but I noticed that after about 6 weeks the inner nipple started getting warped and LO looses a lot of milk out the sides of her mouth. I've noticed some people say they stopped using the inner nipple and only used the clear portion, that might make a difference for you.

Not 100% sure about changing nipples--depends on LO.

Ditto to all this. The standard do seem take longer.  The blue part of the breastflow died after multiple washings and we quit using it.  The only issue with that is that then the nipples collapse (without the blue part.)  Now, we've pretty much switched to the medela/gerber bottles with regular old nipples.  I think the rule is if they don't gag on the extra milk flow, switch to the next stage whenever it works for you.
