spitting up/throwing up the entire bottle of formula...

A few times in the past week my LO will eat all 4 oz of her bottle of formula; and she won't burp at all.  Then about 10 minutes after she ate it all she spits up/throws up all her formula she just ate.  Anyone have any tips on how to deal with this?  I currently try to burp her after every 1 oz she drinks; however sometimes there is nothing I can do - and she just refuses to burp.  She doesn't spit up/throw up all the time...but lately it's been about once every 2 days or so.  She doesn't seem like it phases her & usually about 30 minutes afterwards she acts like she's hungry again, so we'll feed her and she is back to normal after that.

I just feel so bad for her!  My DD#1 NEVER spit up/threw up...is this normal?

  • Ellie does this about once or twice a week and it was so scary the first time because she choked. Now it's not as alarming but it does make you feel so bad for them.

Our pedi told us it is just the result of an immature valve at the base of the esophagus and should stop happening when she's around 6 months old. Until then as long as she's not in pain and it's not happening multiple times a day it's not a concern.

  • Ok so it could be nothing but it could be something major too. My son started throwing up occasionally and then he started throwing up at four weeks  and after every feeding everything he ate would come up no matter what. And it started projecting out of him, so he could throw up and it would fly between a foot and three feet. (it occurs between 4-6 weeks of age) If this is the case your baby could have pyloric stenosus which means the muscle at the bottom of her stomach will not allow the food to pass to her intestines and she isn't getting anything because the muscle is too big, it acts like a cork. This is pretty rare in females, but I had never heard of it and then I wasn't prepared at all when I went to the doctor. The result is that she would have to have surgery to correct it, which is freaky, but they do it with two little tiny slits in her tummy that don't require stithces and one in their belly button for the camera. I hope this isn't the case! Good Luck!

  • my LO did this starting at week two...im EBF and did a lot of research and ended up burping her more often...only feeding her on one side and feeding her in an upright position those things seemed to work and she hasnt spit up like that in over a week!!

  • My LO does this probably after every other feeding.  My doctor tried to convince me that I probably think its more spit up than it really is.  Maybe so, but its a lot.  They did a sonogram on his stomach and everything was normal.  He is having an upper GI on Monday.  He doesn't seem to be in pain when he spits up.  It just pours out of his mouth.  The discomfort comes when it comes through his nose.  He changed clothes 4 times today due to spitting up enough that it got past his bib and onto his clothes.

Anyway, my LO is gaining weight so the doctors don't seem to think there is any "issue" and that he is just a baby that spits up a lot.  If the Upper GI comes back normal I feel like I have done everything possible and will just except the fact my LO will have a bib on at all times and I will have a burp clothe with me at all times.  It's all good.  I'm sure he'll grow out of it.

It's frustrating.  I know!  I cried many times when he was younger because I felt to bad for him and there was nothing I could do. Hang in there!
