Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Sleeping pattern

My LO only naps once during the day.  She eats every 2 hours and is normally up by 8 or 8:30.  She is awake  until mid day (12 or 1) and then sleeps for about an hour or two.  She is then up until she goes to sleep (lately it has been 9, other nights it's 10 or 11).  When she is awake though, she cries a lot.. even when she is fed, changed, etc. It's hard to tell when she is hungry (she doesn't always suck her hand) because she cries so much so I end up feeding her every 2 hours.

Anyone elses LO have the same pattern as mine? She is 4 weeks old today.  If yours has had the same pattern, when did it get better? Thanks!

Re: Sleeping pattern

  • Sounds like my DD1. Except I had no idea what I was doing, and didn't realize that she needed a LOT more sleep than that. And that she needed a lot of help to get to sleep. I just thought she would sleep when she was tired. Not so.

At 4 weeks, I think 1.5 hours of awake time (including eating time) is about the norm. For every baby. Give or take a little bit, but not much.

Don't beat yourself up about it, but do everything you can to get your kid asleep at or around this time. Once they are overtired, it is a vicious cycle.

  • Agreed - she's definitely over tired! Do your best to put her down for a nap after 45 - 90 minutes of being awake. Try the swing, rocking, nursing (or bottle), shhhing, a sound machine, stroking her head, swaddling, etc. I think you'll have a much happier baby!
