? about timing of glucose test

At my last appt. I told my midwife that I'll be away for 3 weeks (my next appt. would have been during that time so I wanted to know if I should come before or after my trip).  She said that she'd like me to get my 1 hour glucose test before I go- I'll be 25 weeks.  I'm getting the test at the beginning of the week and leaving at the end of the week- so that if I fail I'll be able to come in again before we leave to retest.

I told my sister this and she said that makes no sense because GD doesn't usually set in until around 28 weeks, if it's going to.

My sister did have GD but I trust my midwife and if she wants me to do it at 25 weeks then that's when I'll do it.

I was just wondering if anyone else has heard something similar or has any thoughts.

Re: ? about timing of glucose test

  • My office wants it done at 24-26 weeks. I would trust your Dr over your sister.

  • I had an appointment this morning and my midwife scheduled my test for my next appt, I will be 27 weeks.  I will be going out of town a few days later to get married so if I fail, it will be a week and a half before I can come back to retest.  I asked her about all that and she said its fine, usually its prefered to be done between weeks 26-29 but if earlier or later it will still be pretty accurate.

  • my office tests at 12 weeks (if you're overweight to begin with) and 24 weeks...with my first I failed the one hour at 12 weeks and passed the three hour but failed the one hour at 24 wks and failed the 3 hour at 24 wks - so I was diagnosed with GD at 24 weeks...

  • Every office is different. I do mine at 28 weeks. I've heard of people having them anywhere from 24 to 29 weeks, so it seems like there's some wiggle room.

  • My doctor's office tests between 24-28 weeks.  I'm having mine done at 27 weeks.  I think you should be fine.

  • My dr. told me at my last appt. to have it done around 24 or 25 weeks.  Since she didn't give me the paper work, I will have it done closer to 25 or 26 weeks.

I agree with trusting your dr. and not your sister.  Some people with a family history have to go in earlier than this and it will show up.  In fact, I had some sugar in my urine once and my dr. told me if I had it again, she would send me for my test early.  Luckily it was clear the next few times.

  • Doing mine in the morning, 1 day shy of 25 weeks. My doctor wants the test completed between 24-28 weeks. I do not know when they will begin scheduling my appts more frequently, but since they have been every 5 weeks, I figured I should do it tomorrow before my ultrasound so I do not have to make a second trip. The doc actually thought it was a good idea as the baby wouldnt move out of its position, so hopefully the sugar rush will help :)
