How does daycare heat bottles?

I'm getting started on daycare research, and while I know this is a bit of a nitpicky question, I'm wondering how your daycare heats up bottles with breastmilk? I've read that it isn't good to heat up bm in a microwave, and I also never microwave plastic and we'll probably have the plastic born free bottles. But I feel like that's probably the easiest option for daycares to heat them up. If I were to ask about this or make a special request, would it really be out of the norm of what they do? I want to be selective, but also don't want to be the overly neurotic parent.

Re: How does daycare heat bottles?

  • They have a crockpot that is set on low so the water is constantly warm.  For BM, to avoid any contamination, they have a separate plastic cup in which they scoop some of the water, put the bottle in the cup and the cup in the crockpot.

  • Bottles should never be heated in a microwave period - breast milk or formula and I would not use a daycare that did that.  My daycare used to have a crock pot that was left on with water in it and they would simple place the bottle in that pot to heat.  They recently got a bunch of bottle warmers that they now use and they ahve them marked for EBM and formula (not sure why it matters).  My DD takes her bottles at room temp or cold so hers are only in for a sec if at all.

  • Wow - I have no idea - never even occured to me to ask about this.

  • Our daycare uses crockpots.  One for BM and one for formula.  When we were looking we went to 1 place that just held the bottle under hot water.  I guess that would work...

  • Our day care just puts the bottle in hot tap water for about 10 minutes before giving it to DS to take the chill out. He gets all his bottles at room temp, so I didnt want day care making his bottles warm. Seems to work just fine. And anything you want a day care should do, dont be nervous to ask....you are paying them to do what you want!
  • Use a crockpot of warm water to soak in for a few minutes. No microwave heating.
  • I think it's a great question!  Ours heats the water in dish in the microwave and then sets the bottle in the warm water outside the microwave.  Another center I toured used actual bottle warmers and had separate ones for BM and Formula.

  • Bottles should never be warmed in the microwave, breastmilk or formula.  Microwaves heat unevenly and this can cause hot spots in bottles which can burn baby.

So I'd be very wary of any daycare that uses microwaves.  Are you looking at centers or in home?  None of the centers I looked at used microwaves!  Ours heats them up in warm tap water.  They use jugs and fill with the water, they have seperate ones for BM and formula.

  • Same as a lot of the PP - our DC uses a crockpot.

  • My daycare puts the bottles in plastic containers and then runs the faucet on hot constantly over it for 5 mintues or so.  It drives me crazy.  All I can think about is all the wasted water going right down the drain!
  • Ours used to use crockpot but they switched to bottle warmers. Running water for 5 min is a very waste of water and not very efficient.

  • Like the others have said: crock pot.
  • My kids have been in 2 daycare centers (we switched once) and both used a crock pot.

  • They run her bags of milk under warm water.  Or they will heat up water in the microwave and then let the milk sit in the bowl of water until warm.

Also from what I have heard, at least at my day care, they are not allowed to heat up any bottle in the microwave.  Even formula.  It can cause hot spots and the baby could get burnt so it is against regulations.
