Alimentum Users - Powder or RTF - Is there a difference?

My LO is on his 3rd day of Alimentum.  I used the power for the first two days since that is what the doctors office gave me as a sample.  It is so hard to mix, so I thought about trying the RTF starting today.  I also add rice cereal due to his reflux (per doctors recommendation), and this stuff seems so thick after I mix in the cereal.  I mix 1 tsp of cereal w/every ounce of formula.  He drinks 3 ounces of formula.  The other formulas we've tried didn't seem as thick.  Anyway, I haven't seen much of a difference in LO in regard to if he likes the power or RTF yet.

If your LO drinks Alimentum do you use power or RTF and have you seen a difference?

  • My doctor explicity told us to use RTF (the cans or plastic bottles) because the powder contains corn which may trigger more allergies.

  • Thanks for the reply.  My doc didn't say anything about this.  I'm glad to know.

  • Just FYI, the best prices I've found for the RTF Alimentum is Walmart.  Also, if your LO is taking it for allergies, it might by covered by your insurance (I'm going through this process right now).  Good luck to LO...  and be prepared, their poop will be like pancake batter (we had a couple of leaks :)
  • Bubsie - YES!!  his poop is disgusting!  Does it stay this way or is it his system getting use to it?  I checked with my insurance and they don't cover it.  Is there something specific I need to say to get them to consider covering it?  I told them his doctor put him on it as no other formula was working.  I didn't tell them but his  doctor also put him on it because the other formulas were causing eczema.  Perhaps I should have told the insurance company that part.  I would think that if it is medically necessary it would be covered!?!?!

Thanks for letting me know about the best prices.  Do you buy the white container or the little cans?

  • I find the plastic bottles better b/c sometimes LO takes 3 oz then will need 5 oz so the plastic ones seem easier for me, but LO doesn't seem to notice a difference.  I have Oxford Healthcare and there is a provision in my policy for medical necessary formula.  Call your insurance directly and ask for medical management (they might ask your + your doctor to provide medical info for a pre-authorization).  LO has been on it for 2 weeks and the poop is still like pancake batter.  We just started adding rice cereral too for her reflux and pedi told us it might add some bulk to her poop, but Altimentum babies always will have thinner poops.  Does your LO have milk protein allergy ?

FYI...  found it at Walmart for $6.97 and I had some $5 Similac checks so I got 3 bottles for $1.97 each!   Thanks again for letting me know that Walmart had the best price.
