I swaddled my lo only at night for her first few weeks probably to about 4-5 weeks old. Now sometimes i swaddle her at night usually when she gets her bath before bed.

She is 7 weeks and I have been swaddling her all the time. Today is my first try at no swaddle and put her down still awake for a nap. A friend suggested it be a good idea to be able to put her down still awake and just very tired so I gave it a shot. Only took 3 times of me going back in to comfort her and put back down and she is out. If this continues to work then I will only swaddle at night and then plan to stop that around 2.5 - 3 months or so.
Mine is swaddled for naps and night at this time. I unswaddle her at anytime she is not sleeping. Including middle of the night feedings. At this age, I don't see any issue with it. DD1 was swaddled for 6 months... maybe a little longer. It was the only way.
DD2 seems to respond really well to it, so why mess with it! She gets plenty of "free" time too. I see what you mean, since they sleep so much, but it seems like it helps mine to sleep well, and thus she is happy

Re: swaddling
That's okay that your LO is swaddled most of the day, as long as it's only when she is sleeping.
We swaddle DS for all naps and at bedtime. My reasoning is, Why teach him two ways to fall asleep?
