question about m/s and work

For those ladies who had pretty bad morning sickness, did you just go to work and tough it out or did you find yourself missing any work? I've been having to take at least one day a week off almost every week and feel so badly about it! I'm just wondering how common this might be.

Re: question about m/s and work

  • I only had to miss work one day the whole first tri.  I had puked on the car on the way into work, so that kind of sealed the deal.  The rest of the time, I just fought through it.  I never really puked at all, just nauseous most of the afternoon for about 2-3 weeks.  Luckily, I am just in my cube 90% of the day, so that was kind of easy.  I could just sit at my desk and wait for things to pass.  We also have a little hotel like room in our office that I would sit in if things were really bad and I needed to lay down.

Are you able to eat and keep food down?  If you are having a really tough time, I would talk to your doctor and see if there is a prescription they can give you.

  • I toughed through it.  My boss is pretty understanding and so there were a few days I came in a little later than I normally do.  I do know some people that actually had to go on medical because they were so sick.  They had doc notes and were out on STD Medical leave basically for a few weeks.

  • My job has me on my feet back and forth between several labs in the building all day. Unfortunately, on my "bad" days, my nausea is pretty bad all day and night. I'm only actually throwing up after dinner but I'm guessing it isn't enough to get a prescription. I have an appt with my doc next week so I'll ask then. I can't keep missing work like this. :(

  • Your doc will probably give you Zofran no problem.  Hope you start to feel better soon!

  • I toughed it out, but it was difficult at times. I never actually threw up, but I felt sick all day, every day. My doctor prescribed Zofran, and it really did help!

  • I was on zofran for my whole pregnancy. I threw up daily from 9 week until I delivered( including while delivery). To be honest, you will get used to it. Plus trying eating small meals all the time.

definitely sounds bad enough to get a script for it. Good luck, and I hope you start to feel better soon!

  • I had to take unpaid medical leave because mine started at 6 weeks and i was throwing up daily until week 15.

I tried the zofran and it made me feel completely drugged up. I just didn't feel comfortable continuing to take that kind of drug - totally personal but it wasn't working so i figured whats the point.

with unpaid medical it didn't count against maternity leave but you may want to check with your hr just to check if that ends up being an option for you.

  • Ladies, thanks for all the info! I am often sensitive to medications so that is something for me to keep in mind. Hadn't thought about that.  Hope it is something that will work for me, though.
