powder vs ready to feed formula

Does anyone have a baby who did great with the ready to feed formula but had issues with the powdered version of the same brand?  My baby will take the ready to feed no problem, but when I tried powdered formula the other night he was very unhappy- spitting up, arching his back, gassy.  I have just gone back to ready to feed but it's expensive and I'd like to get him to take the powdered if possible- any suggestions.  I use Enfamil Premium.

Re: powder vs ready to feed formula

  • Ours is on similac advance and hasn't had issues going between both. He is a real easy going baby though and hasn't had issues with any feeding changes. Maybe he is just a piggie :) We don't have out of the ordinary gas either though

  • We mix our formula from powder, we let it sit for a minute so the bubbles can get out of it, though, we use Enfamil Gentlease.

  • We had issues the first couple of days so we went back and forth between the liquid and powder while we tried out different bottles. I agree about letting it settle, it also might help if you mix in a separate container then pour into the bottle.

  • We had the same issue. We started out with the powder and had lots of gassy problems. A friend told me the froth from mixing the powder causes gas. We switched to the liquid and had no troubles after that.

We have a little jar we got with a bottle cooler at the hospital, it's supposed to be a breastmilk storage bottle, but it works nice for mixing, especially since the gentlease is so thick and if you mix it in the bottle you can get some pretty odd clogged nipples.

  • A few drops of Mylicon in the bottle will get rid of the gas bubbles and settle LO's tummy nicely.
  • It could be caused by the bubbles from mixing the formula.  It could also be caused by corn starch.  All powder formula contains a high concentration of corn starch solids.  I would bet it's in the first few ingredients.  It is not in RTF.  It could be that he can't tolerate the corn.  My son could not tolerate powder formula until he was over a year.  (He was on formula until 20 months because of other issues).  If letting the bubbles settle doesn't help, I would bet it's corn.  Our pedi GI said it isn't that uncommon and it is most often quickly outgrown.  Just try again every few weeks or so to see if your LO can tolerate it.

Sometimes with the powder the shaking is what gives LO gas.  My DS did not have a problem with either, but was def a different baby after we starte dpreparing the formula at night. Dr. Brown makes a formula pitcher that mixes the powder and takes out a lot of the bubbles....i just make 32oz at a time and leave it in the fidge...heat it as needed. LO loves it room temp and his gas is much better!! (I use enfamil gentlease)
