WTF is this rash?

OK... I know I need to call the ped.  I'm waiting til Cooper wakes up from his nap though...

Cooper had an ear infection last week and took zithromax from Tues to Friday.  Fine on Sat/Sunday.  Monday had another fever, went to the ped, they said it wasn't clear if he had a new ear infection or if they were still just healing.  Gave me new antibiotics but said to hold off and see if he got better or not.  Got better.  So no more antibiotics.

Meanwhile he ate a lot of cantaloupe on Sunday or Monday and has had really gross poops since then.  Cantaloupe does this to him but not usually for multiple days.  He woke up at 5AM crying hard, and then farted loud a few times and pooped.  I've changed maybe 6 diapers already today - none huge, but all diarrhea-y.   So of course he has diaper rash - and this is where the rash story starts.

Rash is right in his butt and bright red like normal diaper rash.  but then all over his butt cheeks are little red pimple like dots.   And I noticed some on his hands too.  He's teething and chewing his hands HARD.  So I thought maybe a yeasty rash that he's getting on his hands too? Or else acidic saliva from teething causing the butt issues.

But right before I put him down for his nap, I saw those same little red pimply things on his shins/calves.  WTF?  Nothing on his chest or back or arms.

Any ideas???/

Re: WTF is this rash?

  • Perhaps an allergic reaction? I'm deathly allergic to all melon. I read somewhere that they share some of the same properties as ragweed. They make my throat itch and swell up, and give me awful hives.

I hope he feels better soon!

  • Mason gets weird rashes from cantaloupe, red/white bumpy around his mouth, or swollen lip, etc.  This started last summer.  We were told it was from the natural hestimines (sp) in it.  He has never gotten them on other body parts.

Sorry not much help, hope the ped has something more.

How soon after eating it?  This is a few days after eating it...

  • Sounds like a yeast infection to me. It can happen when taking antibiotics, since they kill off all the good things too.

Yeah, M gets it right away, like while still eating it.  Sorry.

  • Maybe hand, foot & mouth disease ??

    Here is a link

    Sounds right to me...

    Mama to Z - 5.5 years, G - 3.5 years, & M - 1.5 years.
  • I would have said yeast infection too, but they normally only get it where it's dark and damp, link under the chin/neck folds, diaper area... so shins/calves is weird.  Not impossible (do NOT google this... I did and such pictures of neglect), but weird.

  • My vote is for yeast...

  • Yeast was my original vote too.  Hand Foot and Mouth doesn't seem right when I look that up.   The shins/calves are what is weird though about the yeast.   I put clotrimazole on his butt after his last diaper so I'll see if that looks like it helped at all....

Yeah I thought that too, but it was a few days after he stopped taking the antibiotics.  And he's been eating yogurt like a crazy person.

  • I was going to say hand foot and mouth too, when J had it, it presented just like you describe.

Is zithromax an antibiotic, and if so is the generic name some sort of -mycin (arithromycin, neomycin?) I'm allergic to those and they give me hives.  Could it be that?

  • I'll look at him more when he wakes up.  There wasn't anything on the bottoms of his feet or palms of his hands.  And I don't think there's anything in his mouth, but I'll look when he wakes up.  Like I said it started on his butt.  So that's also why I'm not thinking HFM....

Zithromax is azithromycin.   It's not hives though.  But he did react to amoxicillin.

  • Fifths Disease maybe? very common, we've had it - but only the "slapped cheek" version..Daycare said something that presented with a rash was going around but it had not been identified yet...

Late to the game, but Max had an all over body rash reaction to both Amoxicillan and Azithromycin. It started on his bottom and arms/legs, then went to his chest, tummy, back, neck. It never went to his face. It looked like this:

Is this what Cooper's looks like? I hope he feels better soon! Poor baby!

  • My vote is for an allergic reaction to the antibiotic.  That sounds exactly like what happened to me when I found out I was allergic to amoxicillin.  Antibiotics can stay in your system for a while doing their work.  I didn't start breaking out until a few days after I finished the entire dosage, and it traveled to different parts of my body over the course of a week.   I hope he feels better soon!

  • Knemo it looked like that for amoxicillin. But this is a lot fewer bumps. Little red pimply looking things. They're on his elbows and knees now. But they almost seem to come and go. I'm thinking random virus now. He had a fever on Monday. So maybe that was just a random virus. They don't seem to bother him. But he just gt so upset at something that he cried til he puked. Which isn't normal for him either. But five minutes later he was fine. I wonder if I can email a picture to the ped??
