I don't think my DS is 'normal', so take my experience for what it's worth: I tried to give my DS a sippy cup around 1, and while he tolerated it ok, it didn't come out as fast as he wanted. We did try cutting the end of the plastic sippy -- haha, he wasn't quite ready for that much liquid at once, though. We switched to a straw sippy and he liked those for a few months. He's been drinking out of a regular cup for about a year now. He gets a straw cup or a bottle of water in the car. He never took a bottle, though, so maybe this impacted things?
daycare started transitioning my DS around 2 y.o. He's 3 now and can successfully drink from a cup. That's not his sole method of drink, but when I know we're going to my mom's house or another relatives' I don't pack a sippy because he can use a regular cup.
We started using regular cups when DD1 was around 2 1/2. Now she drinks from them when she's sitting down for meals, but she still uses her (straw) sippy for water around the house or in the car. She insists on sleeping with it too.

DS started to drink from a cup at 18 months at DC. We still use straw sippy cups a lot at home just because it is easier. He will only drink water out of a regular cup.
Just before DS turned 2.5 we started using a regular cup at mealtimes. I call it a 'big boy cup'. I use a very small cup that's only about 1/2 full of water, so if he spills it's not a huge mess. He'd be happy to use one all the time, but for my sanity I still give him sippy cups for around the house & in the car.
She drinks out of regular cup for meals at the table now and has for a few months. She still uses the beginner sippy cup for her milk first thing in the morning and also uses straw cups if we are out and about.
Teh daycare center we use starts working with the kids on real cups (they use the tiny bathroom cup size ones) as soon as the kids move into the toddler program at around 16-18 months. I am trying to remember but I am pretty sure I moved both kids to small regular cups for meals shortly after they each started the toddler program so at 20 months or so. I took away all sippy cups at age 2 but still do use the straw, water bottle type cups with the girls for when we are out and about or if they want to take them with them at bedtime or around the house. Meal times we only use real cups.
She's been using a toddler size cup since around 18 months (thanks to daycare - I never would have given it to her then). She uses regular cups at the table with meals, but still uses a Take and Toss Straw Cup for either around the house or in the car. She also sleeps with a Nuby Straw cup of water (only thing I've found that doesn't leak in her bed) and I have a few insulated sippy cups that I sometimes take when we're out somewhere and I need to have milk for her (she's on soy milk, so I bring it from home usually).
