Any ideas? Re: PTing

PTing is going a lot better than I imagined. C is doing a great job of staying dry, even at night and for naps which I thought would take forever. He's also done a great job out in public and I don't worry about him having accidents when he's out with us. Our only problem is that he won't tell us when he has to go pee.  He will say "poopy" when he has to go #2 but he has only told us a couple of times that he has to go potty and then end up peeing only.

When we started out PTing I just took him every hour or so that way he could get use to going in the potty and not in his diaper.  While it worked to teach him that he only goes in the potty, I think it might have taught him that I just take him and he doesn't tell me when he has to go.

This has proven to be a problem at the sitter because I think she expects him to tell her, even though I've told her numerous times that she just has to take him every 1 1/2 - 2 hours because he isn't going to tell her he has to go.  It also caused him to have an accident Sunday morning while he was in his toddler room at church.  We had a guest preacher that ran a little over normal time and by the time I got him out of the toddler room and to the bathroom he had already peed. If he would have told one of the women in the room they could have taken him sooner.

So I'm looking for suggestions on how to fix my mistake and how to get him to tell us when he has to go. He tells us when he needs to poop, I think because he can feel that urge better.  If I could just get him to tell us when he needs to pee we would be fully PTed!

Re: Any ideas? Re: PTing

  • Just my opinion but I think you're having issues with this because 25 months is too young to expect a child to be fully PTed and telling you when he needs to go (and yes I know it works for some people but I just feel it is easier for child and parents to wait a bit longer).  But since you have already started I think your options are to either go back to pull-ups but still sit him on the potty throughout the day and re-train with underwear in a few months when your child is more verbal OR to just continue what you started.  Good luck!
