Tennessee Babies

ObGyn in Nashville

I think there was a post on this a few pages back but the bump ate those pages - dumb Bump!

We're moving to Nashville in May/June and are expecting twins. So I'd like to deliver at Centennial, Baptist, or Vanderbilt since they have level III NICU's. Any recs for obgyns that deliver there or have experience with twins?

After 2 losses, IVF #2 brought us our little boys.

  • I'm not sure about OB's, but I will tell youu that my cousin delivered her babies at Centennial and had a great experience.  She said the staff was friendly, the service was great, and the security was top noch.  Neither of her babies had to visit the nicu, so I'm not sure how it is...  You may just want to check out the OB's on each hospital's website.  I'm using Middle TN Medical Center in Murfreesboro.  I considered finding a new OB so that I could deliver in Nashville, but I really love my OB.  I use the Women's Health Specialist practice.  While MTMC doesn't offer a level III NICU, they do offer a level IIb NICU which I've heard is great too.

  • I'm going to Donald Barnett MD and he's really good. He delivers through Baptist or Centennial. I would try and stay away from Vanderbilt though. A couple of my friend have had babies there and hated it. Others rave about Baptist and Centennial. I'm going through Baptist and so far love it!

  • I am going to Baptist and my Dr. is Dr. Crowe.  She and her staff is amazing and so helpful.  Anytime I have a question they take time to talk to me and then call me back to check up on me.  Dr. Crowe has a great attitude and I couldn't imagine a better Dr.  She is great at keeping everything straight forward but with humor.
  • I had triplets...so I was a high risk pregnancy. I saw Dr. Carpenter, Dr. Garrison, & Dr. Bennett (Maternal Fetal Medicine/High Risk - they rotate...but since I was going every other week/every week, I saw all of them frequently) at Vanderbilt Women's Health Center at 100 Oaks location, and delivered at Vanderbilt b/c I needed the level III NICU. I had a great experience there, I couldn't have had better care for myself or the babies. They also have OB-GYN's at that location too if you don't need the high risk doctors. Good luck!

  • I see Dr. Lewis Bellardo at Tennessee Women's Care.  He delivers at both Baptist and Centennial.  He is amazing.  My friend also saw him and she had 2 high risk twin pregnancies.

  • The ObGyns at TN Women's Care deliver at Baptist and Centennial.  There's a big group of them and I've only heard great things about all of them.  Dr. Dunn and Dr. Bellardo especially.  I see Dr. Smallwood and he's great too.  Their number is 615-301-1000.  Good luck...and welcome to Nashville! :)

  • Hi,

New here, although I have been a "lurker" for quite a while.  I used the Knot a lot during my wedding planning, whew, almost 4 years ago.  Yikes, that makes me feel old.  Anyway, I just thought I would give my knowledge about OB's in this area.  I am a RN at the children's hospital here in Nashville (I won't give the name...due to work policy  :P )  but I am a former NICU nurse at CMC in Nashville as well.  My OB is Eileen Cassidy, who is in Erin Yu's group, which is an all-female group at CMC.  Their group is Women's Medical Associates, and has 5 MD's in the practice.  All are very sweet and caring.  The mothers that I took care of (well, I took care of their babies) were happy with their OB's and loved this particular group (among others).  For this reason I chose Dr. Cassidy.  All OB's in Nashville that AREN'T at Vanderbilt will deliver at CMC and Baptist.  Very few OB's who don't practice (or have their clinic) at Vandy will deliver at Vandy, unless they have privileges.  This is because Vandy is a teaching hospital and has their own house staff, as well as residents and fellows.  If you decide to deliver at Vandy, you will have a resident physician deliver your baby.  Meaning, they are out of medical school and have passed boards, but they are still in training.  Vandy's NICU is the "top" NICU in middle TN, just because it is the big medical center.  All critically ill babies are typically sent to Vandy--especially if they need surgery.  None of the other hospitals will do major surgeries on the babies, maybe a quick PDA ligation, which is a heart condition that premies are born with, or laser eye surgery for retinopathy of prematurity for the itty-bitties.  But Baptist and Centennial do have great NICUs, and will keep itty-bitty premies, but if it is "complicated" then it will be transported to Vandy. All of the other hospitals in surrounding areas such as the Boro, Smyrna, Williamson Cty have NICU's--typically they are level II, which means they can take babies who may need oxygen or bili lights postpartum, but anything more complicated will be sent to Baptist or Centennial.  And then onto Vandy if needed. So, yes, they are all level III NICUs, but not all will keep the surgical cases.  But, please be reassured that if your baby needs to be taken to the NICU, the people who will be taking the baby for a higher level of care are very well-qualified to provide care for your little one!

Whew, that was a lot of information.  I just figured that I could help give my opinion!   Good luck finding a new OB!  I hope that I could clear up some information for you!  And HELLO to everyone!!!!

  • PS--So sorry, I got carried away with that last post.  I meant to add that the MFG (Maternal-Fetal Group) on 23rd Avenue in Nashville is AMAZING.  I would say that 90% of our NICU babies were born to these physicians.  (Obviously any high-risk delivery would go to the NICU) It is Dr. Fortunato, Dr. Lombardi, Dr. Robinson, and maybe a couple others, but these were the ones that I remember.  They deliver at Centennial for sure, and probably at Baptist, but I have never worked at Baptist, so I can't really say for sure. www.matfet.com

As far as the Vandy OB's go, of course they have high-risk just for the fact that it is Vandy.  Again, the big medical center thing.  The OB's are at the 100 Oaks location, which is a brand spankin' new center and it is BEAUTIFUL.  Vanderbilt Hospital is rather old, and so is Baptist.  CMC is pretty new, I think it was built in the 2000's.  IMHO, I won't be delivering at Vandy because my OB doesn't have privileges there.  And for the whole "I have worked here for a while" thing.  That could be awkward....I know nurses all over the hospital...I know we have to be professional but still, nurses love to talk!  :)  Anyway, hope this helps!
