Was anyone sick with a cold or something similar during labor and delivery?? I've had a cold for the past several days and think it may be turning into a sinus infection (hopefully seeing the doctor in a bit). I was 3 cm and 50% effaced at my appointment yesterday and had lots of contractions and bloody show last night. I know that doesn't necessarily mean anything but I am a little worried about going into full-blown labor while feeling so crappy!!
Anyone go through something similar?? Did they did you anything at the hospital to help relieve cold symptoms during labor??
Re: Sick with Cold during L&D
I got sick the day before I was induced. I had a horrible cold. I had kleenex stuffed up my nose the entire time. I was so mad. On top of everything else I had to deal with being sick. They gave me benadryl but surprisingly the thing that helped the most was the pain killer stadol (I think that's what it's called). It knocked me out and when I woke up my nose wasn't dripping down my face anymore!
I did not get sick at throughout my pregnancy until two days before I was induced when I woke up with my first ever sinus infection!! I was sick as hell when I gave birth and I woke up the next day unable to hear out of my right ear! I was sooooo clogged up (yet with a runny nose) and I could barely blow my nose because I had an unexpected c-section. It was kind of hellish, I'm not going to lie.
My OB gave me a Z-pack in the hospital that I finished the day after I was discharged and they had pumped me full of antibiotics when I went in for the c-section. Even with all that, it took two weeks for the cold to clear up.
On the bright side, I pretty much ignored my cold while in the hospital because I was so enraptured with my LO, And my OB reminded me that I was passing antibodies to LO through my breastmilk for this infection.
It's not ideal to be sick in L&D, but it's not the end of the world either. Just keep your doctor updated and they should be open to helping you so that you're not miserable. Good luck!!
I was in-bed sick the morning I went into labor: sore throat, hacking cough, major congestion, chills, completely exhausted...and contractions!
I loaded up on Mucinex, garlic capsules, 3000mg of Vitamin C, and Zinc, as directed by my midwife, and I can't say if it was those remedies or just sheer adrenaline, but I didn't feel a single symptom during active labor.
Try not to worry too much, your body will kick into gear and get the job done and more than likely you'll be too busy to notice your cold in the moment.
