We started using a play gym at 4 weeks. She started by just laying under it watching the toys intently and now she lays under it and kicks and throws her arms while smiling and talking.
ETA: You're supposed to wait until they have good head control before you use the seat. I put Ellie in it a few nights ago and she sat in it for a few minutes looking around before her head started wobbling.
I give up trying to get a ticker. I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome. Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself. Hmmm. How about...
"It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?" - A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
I tried the play gym a few times early on but he didnt like it until about 6 weeks. Now he stares at the toys and kicks and flails his arms around. Ours has a mirror too that he likes looking into.
Bumbo - still not completely comfortable using it. Our LO has great head control - he'll hold his head up for a good 5-10 minutes easily during tummy time, but I feel like when he's in the Bumbo, he's wobbling all over the place (more from his core, which makes his head bobble too).
I don't have a bumbo... never thought that they were a wise money decision since you can use it for just a few months.
But as far as the activity mat goes, that can be used right away. It is good to put LO on for tummy time (awake laying on their stomach) and helps the with lifting their head and stuff. My ds likes about 15 minutes of tummy time at a time and then he gets bored with it.

Mat-about 3 weeks. Bumbo-this week. I put it on the floor next to the couch with a pillow behind his head for extra support (although his head control is pretty good). He loves to sit up in it.

we got a bumbo type seat as a gift and i thought the instructions suggested to start at 4 months? anyway, i tried to put griffin in it a few times but he still wobbles all over the place and hes cried a few times in it. i guess hes not ready for it yet.
