Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Still only naps in swing. Anyone else?s LO?

Does your LO still exclusively nap in the swing?  I guess maybe we created a bad habit from the time he was born, but he would never nap/sleep laying flat/still when he was born.  Only the swing would put him to sleep.

Now DS is 4.5 months old and he still will not nap in his crib.  We?ve tried various times to put him in his crib for naps.  He will go down to sleep in his crib but will only last about 10-20 min in it.  In the swing, he?ll usually go 45 min to maybe 2 hours.

DH is a SAHD, so he gets the frustration of when he tries to do the crib for naps.  Every now and then he tries the crib again, but b/c DS needs sleep and b/c DH would like a bit of a break, he resorts back to the swing.

The swing only goes to 25 pounds, and DS is probably pushing 18 already.  We?ve got to get him used to napping in the crib sometime soon.  I love my mom, but she makes comments when I spill my frustration with DS only napping in the swing ? she says that ?he needs to know where he?s supposed to sleep? ? meaning he needs to be napping in the crib.

DS sleeps in the crib at night just fine.  He definitely doesn?t STTN, but he does sleep a 2.5-6.5 hour stretches in the crib.

Also, did anyone else have a LO that only napped in the swing and then worked on transitioning to naps in the crib?  How hard/long did you have to work at it?

Re: Still only naps in swing. Anyone else?s LO?

  • W never naps more than 15 minutes unless he is in the swing. I let him sleep there for my sanity. Once we get night sleep down a little better, we'll work on transitioning to the crib for naps.

  • My LO only naps in his swing, same deal SAHD, I am hoping that by the time he is too big he will be at different developmental part of his life so he maybe ready to sleep in his crib. My lo only weighs 15lbs so it maybe awhile and I have no plans for transition. I do try the crib every once in awhile to see if we wants to sleep there, but he isn't interested.

  • This is my theory too!  Also ? it?s for our sanity. J

DS wakes 2 to 3 times during the night.  He?s not necessarily hungry, just waking up.  But he does always eat if its offered.  I usually just go ahead and BF him b/c it?s easier than fighting him trying to put him back to sleep.

On but we turn it down to a slow as it goes and after and 45min-hour we turn it off completely. He usually wakes up shortly after we turn it off.

  • DS only naps in the swing but sleeps in the crib at night. We are looking at daycares bc I am going back to work soon and each one has said they don't allow babies to stay in the swing longer than 30 minutes. They also said a lot of babies do not sleep at daycare who won't sleep in cribs. We have tried naps in the crib and it has been a fail. I feel like I'm going to have a tired cranky baby every night. DS also still gets swaddled at night and they also said they don't allow that either. Looks like we have some bad habits to break.

Don't consider swaddling a bad habit!  Your DS probably needs to be swaddled to sleep well.

We went cold turkey about 3 weeks ago and DS did amazingly well!  But he had been breaking out of his swaddle (miracle blanket) many, many times during the night.

Yeah, I've always thought that if DS had to go to a daycare right now, he wouldn't sleep much.  When my MIL watches DS at our house and she's put him in his crib he only sleeps for 25 min.

  • FWIW DD sleeps in her crib at night but is swaddled and typically naps in her swing when she's home with us.  I was super worried about it at daycare too (this is her 3rd week) but honestly, she's ok.  Apparently she's napping (I need to ask where) but moreover she's non the worse for wear when we get home...and she's one that will get cranky quickly if she's overtired.  DCP really are used to handling it, and I think our LO's are more flexible than we give them credit for.

  • DS only naps in the swing for us when he is home. We both work and he naps in his car seat at dc....They said they don't like to use a swing because they think they should be holding the babies... which is fine with me. He sleeps ok at night, once or twice waking up. He is also HUGE and I'm worried that the swing will quit before him! lol!!

  • forgot to mention....he sleeps in his crib at night and is still swaddled....

  • Have you tried elevating the crib mattress?  It could be that he just doesn't like laying flat?  DD used to nap all the time in her swing and we were able to transition her to the crib with the mattress elevated over a month and a half ago.  As they get older the habit is going to get harder to break.

  • DS would only nap in his swing until he started daycare at 3 months.   Honestly, it just made more sense for them to deal with it.  He was going to be napping in a new place at daycare, might as well have that new place mean napping in the crib.  So I guess it was cold turkey.

He still naps in his swing at home, but we can put him down in his crib or move him from the swing most of the time with no issues.

If we had a SAH situation, we probably would have tried moving some naps to the crib/PNP.  If that didn't work, then probably cold turkey.
