How do you help LO learn to sit or roll?

I hear a lot of you say that you "help" your LO learn to sit or to roll over.

DD rolls from belly to back but not from back to belly and doesn't really seem interested in back to belly or in trying to sit up.  I realize she's young, of course!

Can you describe what you do with LO to encourage these?

  • I can't help with the sit up, we just pull him up from laying position and help him balance

But, with rolling, my mom showed me a great trick: She put DS on the floor on a blanket, then picked up both sides of the blanket and rolled him back and forth. He loved it and gets the giggles every time. I think that helped him conquer rolling back to tummy

  • For sitting just sit with her on the floor and help her with her balance as much as she needs.  She will strengthen the muscles she needs to do it on her own.  You can try putting toys in front of her and then to each side some too so she turns and reaches.

  • While I was working and W was in daycare I don't think they encouraged tummy time at all, so this was step #1 of encouraging rolling.

Most days, I'll spread a big blanket over my bed (in case of spit up) and we'll sit in the middle of the bed playing. He starts on his back, and I help him pull himself to a sit and give him a toy to play with. If he falls, it's not a big deal because the bed is soft. If he falls backwards, I'll help him pull up to a sitting position again. If he falls forwards, I help him get his arms back under him (he can do this himself now, but couldn't at first). I let him do tummy time for a while then, and once he gets frustrated I don't pick him up. Instead I roll him to his back, and then help him pull up to a sit again.

I haven't been working in three weeks now, and in that time W has rolled back to front for the first time, front to back for the first time, pulls himself to a sitting position with very little assistance, sits very well with no assistance, and even pulls himself to a standing position with a little help.

We do most of this too. That's awesome you got him to do all that in 3 weeks! Yes

  • For sitting, we helped balance him while he would tripod. For him, grabbing his feet helped. We also practiced this on a bed so if he happened to topple, it was a soft landing. Eventually after two weeks, he sits perfectly straight up without falling over.
  • For sitting we do a lot of play time him sitting between my legs so I can help him balance a bit.

For rolling over he just kind of did that one his own reaching for toys and things. I like the blanket idea though.

  • I do 'exercise' with DS - I pull his arms up until he is in sitting position and I turn him halfway over so that he has to push himself the rest of the way.
