Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Anyone else have a really active sleeper?

I put DS to sleep every night in the same position and just about every morning, he wakes up at a 90 degree angle from his original positioning.  When he was smaller, this wasn't as much of a concern to me as it is now.  He's gotten so long now that when he does what DH likes to call "sleep spinning" his head is frighteningly close to the crib rails and I'm so afraid he's going to whack his head really good (it's only a matter of time before it happens - he's growing like a weed!).  I'm considering putting up his bumpers, but then I start to freak about about SIDS.  ::::sigh::::  I wish I didn't overthink things so much...  WWYD?

  • DS is a crazy sleeper as well. He spins and rolls, never waking up anywhere near the spot or position he fell asleep in. We have the breathable bumpers, they are obviously not as cushy as the traditional bumpers but would provide some cushion if he bumps up against the rails.

  • I put E in his crib at 8:30.  At 12 he woke up face against the rails.  I centered him again and he fell back asleep.  He woke up at 2 with his face against the rails.  I centered him and he fell back asleep.  He woke up at 6 with his face against the rails!

This kid is a crazy sleeper.  I have him swaddled so tight and even an extra thing around his legs (he kicks his legs A LOT and this helps with that) and he still manages to move all the way down to the corner of his crib sometimes.

  • My DS is a VERY active sleeper.  Moves around all night long, he's all over the place!  lol  He has hit his head and gotten arms and legs caught up a bit in the crib.  Our pedi said that it is safer for him to bump his head or get arms/legs caught than it would be to use bumpers.  He said that babies cannot do that much to hurt themselves.  They may cry when it happens, and my DS did, but he stopped in less than a minute and went back to sleep.

  • DS never wakes up in the same spot, no matter what. He's always spun around and jammed into a corner somewhere. We use breathable bumpers and they work, considering DS's face is, more often than not, pressed up against the side and he's literally breathing through it. He can still whack himself if he flails hard enough, but I'd rather have the breathable bumpers offer some kind of cushion and prevent him from getting his limbs stuck.

  • Our pedi didn't even like the idea of breathable bumpers.  He said he knows they are approved by lots of peds, but he just feels that nothing in the crib is always the best way to go, but as a momma...I would do whatever makes you feel comfortable.  :)

  • Thanks for the input, Ladies.  I hadn't even thought about breathable bumpers!  DUH me!  I'm still not entirely sure about them, so I'll do a little research and see what the pediatrician thinks about them.  I'm sure he can't do that much damage to himself in his crib, especially since he hasn't just yet, but really, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

And btw, all your LOs are ADORABLE!!

  • DS has been like this since we moved him to his crib at 6 weeks. He does 180s and everything. Now that he sleeps on his tummy, he scoots himself up to the corner of the crib. I've been thinking about buying some breathable bumpers so he doesn't hit his head, but I wouldn't put the regular bumpers on because he usually has his head right up against the rails in the corner.
  • We are in the same boat, he started spinning and is growing so much that he doesn't fit that well across the crib.  The other fun part is that we've elevated the crib because he's had such a bad stuffy nose, so I'm worried he's going to do a 180 and have his feet up instead.  We don't use bumpers though and so far (*knocks on wood*) we haven't had any problems with him bumping himself on the rail or getting any limbs stuck

  • DD is all over the place in her crib.  She usually rolls over onto her tummy at some point, and in doing so, ends up wedged against the rails.  Watching her on the monitor, I've seen her bump her head, get an arm or foot between the rails, etc etc, and if it wakes her up, it's not enough to really make her cry.  She just readjusts and goes back to sleep.  Your LO likely wont hurt himself bumping his head, it's not worth the risk of putting a bumper in there, IMO.

  • Yes!!  My LO has always been an active sleeper.  She manages to unswaddle and move all over the place.  I have a picture of her with both legs dangling through the crib rails one morning when I went to wake her up.  I will try and post LIP, but sorry in advance if it doesn't work!

  • DS moves a lot in his sleep and is a BIG kid...I've seen him hit is head several times, and he often wakes up with red marks on his face/head from sleeping up against the rails... still, for now, I don't believe in bumpers. If he ever hurts himself, maybe I'll reconsider.
