I'm coming over from the Sept. 2011 mamas looking for cribs recommendations. I know I am a little ahead of the game but I will starting my second tri soon and wanted to get in as much research as possible.
I think I want a crib/changer combo as I think it may save a little space and I think it may be a little easier to change baby with it being close to the crib.. could I be wrong?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Re: Please rec your crib
We bought the Graco Lauren. Cheap, sturdy, attractive, no regrets.
We just have a changing pad on top of his dresser. I think you're overthinking the whole easier to change baby close to the crib thing (we all overthink things when we're pregnant!). It's not a big deal to walk a few steps to the top of the dresser, and that actually DOES save space because you're only using one piece of furniture instead of two (or a crib that is the size of two pieces of furniture).

DD's crib is the baby cache oxford. DS's is the babi italia pinehurst. both are convertibles that will change to a toddler bed and then a full sized bed. we wanted something that was sturdy and mature with them and we plan for each child to keep this furniture for the next many years.
we like both sets but i'll say for the durability and high standards, the babi italia brand wins out. that set looks beautiful 2 years in and i expect that it will continue for the duration of its use.
i also agree with the pp - we went with a crib and a long dresser with the changing pad on top of the dresser. 2 pieces - but each piece is easier to fit in the room rather than the massive size of a crib/changing table combo. and it's no big deal to walk the 2 extra steps across the room.

I also have the Graco Lauren - we really like it.
We had planned to use the dresser as a changing table - but ended up taking advantage of a Target sale in which they gave the changing table for free with the purchase of the crib. I think as long as it is in the same room you are fine.
What I will suggest is that if you spend a great deal of time in one area of the house that is not close to the nursery, like another level, have another changing station there. We have a pack n' play in the living room where we spend our days which is downstairs from the nursery. It has a changing table on it. Although we didn't think about it much before hand - but having it here has been huge.
