Babies: 3 - 6 Months

THUD...THUD...THUD...

This is the sound of my child not going to sleep.  Add to it the sound of his nails scratching along the sheets (through the baby monitor).  He will lay there and raise his legs up and SLAM them back down on the bed.  More in a bored way than a mad way...over...and over...and over...

It's also the sound that says, "I'm awake mom.  Better come get me."

THUD.  THUD.  THUD.

It's kind of disconcerting after awhile.

  • Oh, we get the banging the legs on the mattress too.  She'll stick her legs in the air, roll to the side and let them drop.  Rinse and repeat.

  • Well since D decided to move his bedtime up 2 hours for the last 2 days I went with it tonight and the first sign of sleepiness, yawning eye rubbing, I got to business, looked at the clock as I was finishing up our routine and it was 3 frickin 13. Dangit, so then he tried to put himself to sleep, something he never does but I went with it and ended up not going to sleep at all, I finally swaddled him really well and brought him to the computer with me. I then moved him to the bouncer and let him go to sleep there, I consider that a win on my part although I am not sure what I am going to do when he wakes up.

  • We just get crying... crying in protest of naptime, crying to signify he's awake... crying all the time! Sorry, it's been a long day.

Not sure but this cracked my sh!t up.  Don't mind me, I have the giggles.  You may as well have said the word "penis" and I may as well be a 7 year old boy right now.  Good lord, I need to go home.

  • Oh yeah, we get the thud thud thud too!

Charlie does this too, and I thought it was a "I'm bored and trying to entertain myself" type thing. But then I spoke to a sleep doula and she asked me if he ever did that. She said it's actually a self-soothing technique (much like shaking their head back and forth or sucking on their hand.) But for some reason it's never talked about!

That's so interesting.  It does seem to put him kind of in the "zone" a little and he often does fall asleep afterwards.  Sometimes it seems like a stress thing.  Like he doesn't want me to go away and leave him for his nap (this could be me giving him way too much credit lol).  So he kind of stares in to space and starts the thudding.  I never thought of it as a soothing technique though.

I also never thought of it as a soothing thing because he wouldn't always be soothed by it (or so it seemed to me). But I guess not everything self soothing technique works 100% of the time? I don't know. But now when he does it I just let him go to town and hope it calms him down.

  • Oh know that "thud" all too well! My LO loves to grab her toes then slam her legs down. This is usually followed by a whimper that leads into a full-blown scream. She always lets me know when she's awake!

  • Just hope that doesn't lead to banging her head against the crib. DS did the leg thing then when he got more mobile he would bang his head against the crib...we're so hoping DD doesn't do that.
