Formula Help

My LO is 5 months old he was originally started on Enfamil and had a lot of problems with it so we switched to Goodstart Gentle Plus and it made a big difference.  My cousin works for our pedi so we get free enfamil and our doctor said that we could go ahead and try the enfamil again at this time because his system has matured.  So we tried this last Monday and starting Thrusday he was incredibly sick.  So I switched him back to the Goodstart.  Now I am concerned that he may have a milk allergy or something of that nature because Goodstart uses 100% whey protein and Enfamil uses a milk protein.  Does anyone else have experience with this.  I am not sure what it is in the Enfamil causing him so much trouble but I would like to figure it out before we start with solids.  Any opinions would help thanks!

Re: Formula Help

  • There isn't any way to really know if it's the milk protein or just the way enfamil is structured. You could try Similac to see how he responds to that, but if he's is doing good on the Goodstart, then I would just leave it alone.

And as far as starting solids go, you won't really run into any dairy products for several months so I wouldn't worry about that until you are ready to introduce cheese and yogurt and the like. And, as always, you will take it slowly so you will know the instant there is an issue.

  • When you say he was incredibly sick on Thursday, what does that mean? What were his symptoms?

Also, how did he act between Monday and Thursday?

Honestly, if I were you, I would stick to the Good Start. When you start solids, you are going to want to wait at least 3 days in between trying new foods anyway, to note any reactions. So in reality, you don't "need" to figure out why your LO can't tolerate Enfamil. It shouldn't impact you starting solids anyway.

  • If u dont mind me asking what issues are u having? dd has a sinsitivity to milk protien and was on enfamil and had issues we tried a lot of formula before finding the right one but when we switched from at enfamil to similac she did do a little better. sinsitive formula might work for u it has broken down milk protien but if not alimentum worked for us it still has milk protien but its broken up even smaller i would check with ur pedi but it smells/taste really bad and also makes dds poop really runny.

  • i also agree that if the goodstart is working and the issues are going away stick with it!

  • Well when he was younger he was incredibly colicy and had really bad gas issues and reflux that is why we originally tried the Goodstart.  When we started the formula last week I was slowly introducing the Enfamil which seemed to go well the first 2 days then when I switched to all Enfamil he started vomitting all of his bottle up this happened 2 says in a row.  He also had diahrea (spelling?) since last Thursday.  I took him to the dr's and they said he seemed fine from a medical standpoint no ear infections or anything.  The main thing that concerned me was that the colic seemed to come back.  He is normally a very happy baby and since last week he has several episodes where he cries uncontrollably, just as he did when he was younger.  So I am hoping the switch back eleviates these problems today.  I am going to stick with the Goodstart from here on out
