Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

little poop balls

Ok, I know this is a very unappitizing lunch discussion, but have any of you experience your toddler only having the little harder balls of poop?  Our little one has been doing this for about three weeks.  She always goes 1-2 times a day, but they are always a bunch of little balls.  She has oatmeal with fruit for breakfast, turkey, cheese and veggies for lunch, yougurt for a snack, and whatever we are having for dinner which is always a meat/veggie/starch.

Dark Karo Syrup did not work.  They stayed the same.  Suggestions??

  • how much water is she drinking? mine drinks about 8-16 ounces of water a day and it's still ball-like. When she starts grunting, i give her some prunes.

Same here!  She drinks all the time so I can't imagine that it's dehydration.  The doctor said to try the Karo - we've been on it for almost two weeks and nothing has changed so I stopped.  She never acts like she's in pain, but I just feel like it can't be right.

  • Sometimes that's what DS has; I was never concerned about it personally.

  • yep, we've had little poop balls for a couple of months. her pediatrician said as long as they're pliable and not gray, there's nothing to worry about.

  • B's poop is always like this - well since she was off formula really. She has prunes every day with breakfast - this and the occasional dark Karo syrup have helped her not struggle so much. World of difference!

For the past few days, she has eaten about 1/2 of a fresh plum and today we had smooshy soft poop! I was thrilled to see it and super surprised. Not sure if that's what caused it but if so, I'll keep giving it to her! She actually liked it.

  • You might ask your pedi if giving a small amount (teaspoon) of Miralax once a day would be ok. Our son started having small poop balls around Christmas and then started getting very constipated on a regular basis. We've been giving him Miralax once a day (usually at night in his cup of milk) and it has made a huge difference.

  • That's how DS's is some of the time.  Sometimes it's mush still.  But he never seems in pain while going (when I see him go), so I'm not worried.

The Poop-ball poops are stttiiinnnkkky though.
