Swelling

I was very badly swollen with Eli too, but I had mega BP issues.  This time around I was doing great... then all of a sudden on Friday up out of the blue, I went from being fine (mild swelling, still wearing the rings, could still wear my ballet flats) to being so swollen by the end of the day I could barely get my rings off and you could clearly see the outline of my shoes when I took it off.  Today I feel horrible.  I am going to leave at lunchtime to triple check my BP, but the nurse seems to think I am ok when I called in.  I guess I just didn't think swelling that quickly was normal.  Did anyone else do that in a non PIH, pre-e, etc. type of pg?  Do you think I should be more concerned or is probably just fine?  The nurse seemed to think it was perfectly fine, however offered to get me in today.  However I am dead set against seeing Dr. Burschell (unless I have to) and that is the only person I could talk to today.  I can't stand that man.

Re: Swelling

  • I had a TON of swelling at the end but my BP was always fine.  I just tried to put my feet up as much as I could and made sure I drank enough water.  I would have your BP checked just to make sure since you've had issues in the past though.

  • I had mild swelling  until about week 36- then it seemed like overnight and I was  balloon! I went to dr because I only have 1 kidney- they did labs and checked me out. He said it is prob because baby getting so big and putting pressure on veins/arteries.

FYI- I had a c-section and after the c-section swelling was twice as bad due to fluids they give you during the surgery.  If you have a c-section be prepared. My shoes didn't fit me, had to wear slip on shoes.

  • Thx ladies.  Now I feel so much better about this.  :)  I am absolutely going to monitor BP, since I know that can be re-occurring, but at least I know it is possible without PIH issues.

Oh yeah and I remember the swelling after Eli.  They kept pumping in the fluids through my IV when I was induced.  It was rediculous!

  • I had a lot of swelling (and yes, it would sometimes come on very quickly) during my pregnancies but I was always fine.  It's normal, but doesn't hurt to get checked out if you're concerned.

  • If your BP is normal, I would just take it easy and put your feet up as much as possible the rest of the day.  If you are still swollen and concerned tomorrow, perhaps call and a different dr will be available.  If your symptoms worsen, though, I wouldn't wait to get in.  Good luck and take care!
