Feeding questions

DS will be starting food soon. And I was reading info about it and I am not sure of one thing.   I have heard to just start cereal for am and pm  no "lunch" feeding just formula or BM. But on a website it showed cereal for AM feeding  cereal and fruit or veggie puree for lunch and then cereal again for PM feeding.

What did your feeding schedule look like when you first started DC on puree or cereal?

Re: Feeding questions

  • As a selfish mommy, I wanted to feed her at first, so we fed her cereal (oatmeal) in the mornings to start... before daycare.  We did that from 4-5mo and then started a second meal at dinner time (more oatmeal). A couple weeks later, we replaced oatmeal at dinner with veggies, then added fruit.  Then I started taking fruit and veggies to daycare (around 7mo?).

Slowly but surely.  They say to wait 3-4 days between each new food.  In the beginning, I'd just do a new one each week. It made it easier to remember.  :)

  • We started a little after 6 months on cereal at dinner time.  We chose dinner time because that is when we are all together for a meal, and dh wanted to be part of it.  You don't have to start with cereal or oatmeal, but i think it depends on your ped rec and what age you are starting.  Then we added veggie/fruit to his dinner after about a week of just cereal.  Like Kim we just did one new food a week, it was easier and they don't eat a whole container.  So I would divy each container into 2, so they were ready for the next night.

  • We started with rice cereal on New Years Day, so just over 5 months (Christmas was 5 months) We chose to do the evenings too so we'd all be together and relaxed with nowhere to be.  We did rice cereal for 2 weeks then moved onto oatmeal.  We then started veggies just before 6 months since I was going on my 1st week long work trip and I wanted to be there for the first few days of food!  :)

We only did dinner and didn't start adding a breakfast until she started on fruits.  (SInce waiting 4-7 days between foods takes a looong time it was a few months)

Just take his cue and see if he is interested in the food and go slow and have fun!

BTW we didn't start sending anything for lunch until close to her 1st birthday.

  • We started with bananas.  The only reason they say to start with cereal is that we used to start our babies way way too early on food, so that rice cereal was the only thing they could even sort of digest.

Start off with once a day.  Believe me, that will be plenty.   I think we did dinner to start, then later added breakfast and it was quite a while before we added lunch.
