"the facebook"

Did anyone else have one of those in college?  An actual book, similar to a yearbook, that was distributed to each class at the beginning of freshman year, and had everyone's photos (99% were senior pics) and info (like permanent address) in it?  facebooks from other class years were prized possessions if you wanted info on someone in another class.

I had one in college - this was in 1997, before Mark Zuckerberg revolutionized creeping.  One of my friends had a guy call her after he saw her picture in the facebook and ask her out.  These days, I guess he would have virtually "poked" her.

I heard a story on NPR about bunch of students at Stanford that scanned and uploaded their facebooks to the internet - before Facebook.com.  It made me wonder where my old facebook was...

  • Yes, we had one, I think they called it the "Baby Book" - b/c it was pictures of freshmen.  This was at Miami U in 1996.  I don't think I have mine anymore!
  • Yes!  We had the "dog book."  I was just wondering over the weekend if they still do that.  Probably not.  That's too bad since it led to some pretty funny phone calls from drunk freshmen.

  • Also, our professors had access to our student ID photos.  My freshman calculus professor kind of creeped us all out by having them as a looping slideshow when we walked into the room the first day.
  • My school had one but few people ever got them (you had to order/pay for it). They weren't terribly popular and I don't remember even hearing about them later in my college career. (I started college in '94)

  • Yes!  I had almost forgotten!!  If I remember correctly, we had one each year that included all classes.  Made for some interesting stalking?I mean researching!

  • I just came across mine as I was starting to prepare the guest room for the big room switch.  Syracuse gave them out to all of the freshmen as a way for us all to get to know each other.  It is kind of creepy when you stop to think about it.
