Reflux or start eliminating

Max eats every two hours around the clock. He often pulls off and cries. He scrunches up his face and turns all red. Sometimes he chokes and looks like he is going to throw up I know all newborns are gassy but Max is out of control. He sounds like a dirty old man. I hate that he seems to be in pain when he eats. Do you think this could be reflux? Should I cut out dairy?

Re: Reflux or start eliminating

  • Sounds more like an overactive letdown.  Reflux would result in a very unsettled baby who might try to nurse more often for temporary relief and more sicking up.  Food allergy or intolerances would mean other signs like rashes and more gas and odd diapers between feeds.

  • YUP! I meant to put that in my OP. I definitely have a heavy letdown. I talked to the LC about it but didn't get much advice. What would you suggest?

  • I'm just responding so I remember to keep any eye on this post.  Since I'm also nursing a toddler, the supply and demand is outrageous and is causing me to produce a lot, and my let down is too much for Lila.  The only thing I've been told is to try to pump some or feed Charlotte first, but this makes no sense to me - Lila wouldn't get any foremilk that way.

ETA: Forgot to say that you might want to post this on the BFing board.  I've been meaning to do that.

  • Pumping or hand expressing just a little first will help.  I have a huge letdown too and honestly, when you have a hungry baby....who wants to take the time to do this!?  I have also found that reclining back so that my nipple is pointing toward the ceiling helps because DD has to work against gravity to get the milk out and it's a little slower.  My supply seems to be evening out now based on her needs and I find my letdown is easing too.  So if you are doing a lot of pumping in between feedings to where you are making a ton more milk, this could also be contributing.
