Some of you probably remember that we made an offer on a house last weekend. It was a reasonable offer, and way more than the house was even worth, but the sellers didn't even bother to respond. They said they needed asking price. We then came back and offered them our top dollar (now WAY more than the house was worth) and they again didn't even respond back. So we went back house-hunting and found a house we loved, which we decided not to offer on because of water issues. But it showed us that the earlier house must not have been perfect for us, and that there are better houses for us out there. So we moved on.
Last night, we got a frantic call from our realtor, who had heard from their realtor. Someone else had offered on their dream house-- the house they were planning to buy when they got asking price for theirs. They were now willing to entertain our earlier offer just so they could get a bid in to compete for their dream house.
Mike and I were really torn. We no longer really wanted the house once we had a chance to see that there were better houses out there, and it would have been paying our top price. We almost wanted to take it just so they could get their bid in, because that seemed like the nice thing to do, but our realtor reminded us that it was business and that if we didn't feel it 100%, we should do it. So we didn't. I have to admit that I feel very bad about it this morning because of the situation those people are in now, but I'm glad we didn't take it because I know there is something better out there. It's very interesting how complicated real estate can be...I could never be a realtor!
Re: The tables have turned on house-hunting....interesting.
Way to go, Erin, for standing your ground with these crazy sellers because your heart wasn't 100% there! I would have completely done the same thing.
I think you will soon find a great home!
Karma is really a beyotch.
LOL!
You were smart to say no. These people don't sound super responsible. If they need to get full overvalued asking price on their current house, they probably weren't taking the best care of it. They've been pinching pennies to put toward another home. Looking forward to their dreamhouse that they probably can't afford was the priority. What if they decided to accept the offer? Then you would be stuck.
Things will work out for the best. I hope you find your home soon!

It is complicated- I used to stay up nights worry about this transaction or that deal. Now I feel a little more prepared for the craziness- it's hard to stump me thses days but is is till super stressful and my brain is going 24/7. That being said, I think you did the right thing- a house is usually the biggest financial investment of your life- you should be 100% about the house! Good luck!
I definitely think you made the right decision. They had their chance and passed on the opportunity. No need to feel guilty!
Good luck on the search for your new home!
