Help please

He was just acting like he was starving every time, and all I can do is worry now. I know his stomach cant be that big, and I just feel awful. Im scared he will get sick from eating that much. I just keep picturing Violet from Willy Wonka when she turns into a blueberry...Indifferent

A friend of mine said that I might have to start supplementing in formula. That maybe he isnt getting enough of what he needs.

I totally didnt want to ever go the formula route. But for my sanity and so K isnt acting like this anymore - Ill do it.

How do I supplement with formula? Can i mix BM with formula? I kind of just would only want him to take one thing of formula a day ...maybe before bedtime.

Any suggestions ?

Re: Help please

  • I have to supplement with formula because my son wants nothing to do with bfing so I pump to give him bm. I sometimes have to do a couple ounces of bm and couple of formula and he's good.

  • Yes you can mix your BM and formula but if your LO doesn't finish the bottle it must be thrown out within the hour which is why they recommend that your LO takes the BM first and then try to feed them some formula.

Are you just BFing and not pumping? I am just curious if you know how much he is taking.

I would imagine for a 3 wk old that 4 oz is more then enough. All babies are obviously different but my LO is a week younger and takes anywhere between 2-3oz. Sometimes he acts like he is still hungry and roots around but I will just give him a a pacifier to satisfy the suckling desire and 95% of the time he stops fussing. They do not recommend giving newborns pacifiers until BFing is established though but he doesn't seem to have an issue with it and I bottle feed the majority of time anyways.

  • Babies can act hungry when they're actually gassy. All babies know is that his or her belly hurts, and they just think that eating will make it feel better (as is the case with hunger). Try giving your LO some infant mylicon before feeds and watch your diet. (I found out today soymilk makes my LO gassy, which means all I can have in my cereal is rice milk... gross.)
