Sweet 16 parties?

Is this a regional thing?  The show is on MTV right now and I've never heard of renting a hall/band/formal invites/photoshoots/gowns/etc for a Sweet 16 party.  

Did you have one or go to one? Is this something I need to start saving for?

    My older girls had one.  Not as elaborate as the ones on MTV but we rented a hall (we got this for free since we are members of the fire dept.) got a DJ, lots of decorations, favors, food & drink.  I spent about $800 for the party.

    You only need to save for one if you want to host one, which you dont have to do even if "everyone else" does.

    They were not the norm in my area when I was growing up.
